5.0 out of 5 stars Great resource ... a classic filled with tips
Caught a few thanks to the tips. Used to fish with spinners in small lakes and streams with my Dad. This helped bring back some spin casting to my usual flyfishing only trips.

This book is for rank beginners. The techniques discussed are not innovative and precious little is explained as to what size, weights, and blade shapes are most productive for particular stream structures and depths. I've seen too many beginning fishermen using an inappropriate spinner type and get frustrated easily. More types should be illustrated.

The equipment section is not very helpful, specific rod and reel models would be more appropriate even for beginners. Too many times, beginners buy junk tackle and expect it to handle decent sized trout, it won't. The fish of a lifetime could strike your spinner on the next cast, be prepared for it and don't be disappointed.

Spin Casting Brilliantly is better written and much more helpful.

I have been fishing since I was a young'un but never for trout. Since I recently moved to the mountains, I bought this book along with a fly fishing book to get some insight on trout fishing. For my purposes, I was disappointed in "Spin Fishing for Trout". I think this would be a good book for someone just starting out fishing but if you have been fishing for any time at all, I would use the money to buy a few spinners instead.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Spinner Fisherman, July 24, 2004

I'm a spinner fisherman, too. This book is right on. I use a lot of the techniques described in the book and I know they work. I catch several hundred trout every spring using nothing but spinners.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good book for angling beginners, September 16, 2011
This review is from: Spinner Fishing For Trout: A Proven System of Tackle, Techniques, and Strategies for Catching Trout (Paperback)
When I bought this book, I was hoping to get a lot of detailed and specialized information on spinner trout fishing - the name of the book implies it.

I am a bit disappointed by this book though. I've been fishing for a long time using any fishing technique on freshwater and saltwater, except fly fishing. But I've struggled with catching trout, especially on smaller streams. What I was hoping to get out of this book was to unlock the secrets of being successful in these situations, without having to pick up fly fishing. Eventually I'm sure I will pick up fly fishing, but for now I want to avoid it. That's where I like the author's attitude a lot: He explains that fly fishing is great, but compared to spinner fishing a lot less efficient (and as fly fishermen know, often trout won't even rise at all). His focus is on catching the most trout in as little time as possible.

For me, there's just too much basic advice in this book. It is actually written for someone that has never fished in his life. It goes through the details of what boots to get, how much to spend on your reel, and where to wear your fishing license. There's even a tally of the total costs of your gear purchases in explicit amounts - this kind of information is going to get out of date quickly, and is totally unnecessary for me.

I still found some useful tips in this book. Most of them are in chapter 3 ("Where the trout are and how to cast for them"). The author even mentions that to him, this is the most important chapter in the book. To me it is, too. I wish he had put more effort into providing this kind of information instead of the ultimate basics. I also found some help in chapter 4 ("The strike, the play, and the catch"), and maybe a wee bit in chapter 6 ("Stream characteristics").

I'm giving it 3 stars not because it were poorly written or contained bad advice, but because it's not giving me enough of what I was looking for. The title and description are also quite misleading.

This book is outstanding. It is clear and concise yet offers everything you need to know about catching trout on spinners. The book even helped save me good $ when I went to buy my equipment. I highly recommend this book for any experienced or inexperienced spinner fisherman (or fisherwoman or fisherchild).

I received the book as a gift and it was great. Having kids and going fishing is the all time best...and this book helped me seem like a pro. All Dads need to catch a fish and if your kids pull it off all the better. This was simple to read! I highly recommend it!

Very good book. Informative, entertaining, and covers many aspects of trout fishing applicable to more than just spinner-fishing. The writing style is comfortably familiar without being too folksy.

I didn't know the half of what I was missing until I read this book! You have to believe me! You think you know how to catch trout? Yea, so did I, until I read this book! It was extremely eye opening!
I can't wait until I am able to unleash the full power of this technique even more this spring. I expect my yearly total to at least double if not triple!
I never endorse these types of things. I never use feedback, comments, etc... I just had to this time for my fellow fisherman. Guys, you got to trust me. I fish all over the conutry, and haven't seen anything like this.
See for yourself! Good luck, and great fishing! See you in the stream!
