Another fine example of how comics are able to bridge all gaps,
By
This review is from: Spiral-Bound (Paperback)
the problem i've had in describing this comic to my friends (as i have, to anyone who will listen, since i read it) is that as soon as you say "this book is great for adults and kids" it immediately gets pushed into the children's books catagorey, with dick and jane and captain underpants and what have you. spiral-bound's characters are ageless, something between twelve and twenty two, but who knows? it is a book that's written about adult situations and adult characters, but at the same time, totally excellent for kids, with a good message, all that. it reads like clive barker or lemony snicket or.. like a talented writer wrote it. the story is engrossing, the art is beatiful, the story is sweet and multi-layered, the world is great. all around great, great read for comics lovers of all ages, and 1000% times better for your kid than some harry potter book. great! buy this right now!

One of the best Childrens' graphic novels of all time,
By Chris Schweizer "History Buff" (Atlanta, GA, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Spiral-Bound (Paperback)
Spiral-Bound is one of those rarest of birds, a book that is truly engaging to both children AND adults - either group could be positive that the book was written for them, and simply HAPPENED to be accessible to the other demographic.
The characters are very true-to-life, with each one demonstrating the best and worst that a particular dominant personality trait can exhibit - a desire for the truth, for example, can lead one to be bold and courageous and inventive, but it can also cause one to overlook the feelings and concerns of others in the attempt to find and expose that truth. Children can learn a great deal from the wonderfully nuanced characters and plot, and adults can enjoy an engaging and whimsical story that winds as much as the underground press tunnels featured in these pages. I'd say that this is easily among, if not the best, children's graphic novels ever created.

Renier has uniquely created characters and a world that co-exsist with each other beautifully. With an imagination that spans close to the creative-geniuses of our time, Aaron has accomplished an amazing peice of art and literary bliss. The feeling you'l get from this book is warm and fuzzy. Spriral-Bound makes you wish you could still go on those amazing childhood adventures your heart still longs for.

This is a fun hilarious story. It does have one bit where it "jumps the shark" with a bit that I think even a little kid will think, 'that wouldn't work.' Regardless of that it's a great well drawn story. I think kids will like and if you're an adult fan of comics like Sugar and Spike or old Plastic Man comics I think you'll like it to.

One of my favorite books ever made,
This review is from: Spiral-Bound (Paperback)
The kind of cartoon books I love are the kind that take you so far into a fantasy world that you get lost in it, and regardless of how impossible it seems to have talking animals you get swept up in their lives anyway. That kind of magic happens once in a blue moon for me in books like Jeff Smith's Bone and some Disney stuff. Spiral Bound is one of those books. Not only is it beautifully drawn (and I am very very very particular and critical about how funny animal cartoons should look like if you are going to be original about your design), but wonderfully played out. The characters are so lovable, too.
This is one of those books that is great for kids or adults, like a Pixar movie. No cartoonist should be without this book to learn from and be inspired by.

Story is good...but title and cover are deceiving...,
By Comic Fan (Reno, NV USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Spiral-Bound (Paperback)
I've heard great reviews for this book and decided to buy it. The story is really cute and has some great concepts about how an animal world would live together, and the dramas of their lives are very human (ex- a mother rabbit being unable to communicate with her daughter). But judging from the cover, I thought the characters were going to experience a world in which the scribble of a spiral bound book would come to life and interact with them or something. Since the comments on the back cover warns of a "monster" and "dreamlike" adventures. Then the cover shows a monster made of pen scribble eating the main characters.... But it's not like this at all. In fact, the only spiral bound book in the whole story is the one a little rabbit carries around to record ideas and info! I guess I didn't do enough research on the title before hand. I did like the book though, and the art work is no doubt drawn by a very talented artist. Maybe the only problem I had was with the one-dimension personalities of the characters. The elephant is the shy unconfident one, the dog is the popular one, and the girl rabbit is the one trying too hard to be older and mature than she is... Overall, the focus is on learning to overcome the troubles of life, school and the self.
