Editorial Reviews

2010 release, the stellar return of the world's heaviest Indie Rock band! Already touted as the album of the year by Metal and Indie Rock press alike, Spiral Shadow delivers a mosaic of amazing audio atmospheres. While remaining melodic and musical, huge, heavy, hypnotic waves wash over the listener. Spiral Shadow may be hard to categorize but impossible not to enjoy.

This album is definitely metal, but with a serious progressive/experimental/indie feel to it. They've clearly been listening to a lot of eighties and early nineties indie rock--not really Seattle grunge as much as the cleaner sound of the Pixies and early Smashing Pumpkins. Some diehard metalheads are probably turned off by that but c'mon, those bands were FUN to listen to and so is this album. There's plenty of Ozzy-era Sabbath guitars in here too, but both the male and female vocals actually SING sometimes instead of just shouting. Laura Pleasants clearly is getting her Kim Deal vocals on, sometimes just wordless harmonizing with her guitar notes on tracks like "Don't look back" which is catchy as all hell. There are some psychedelic jaunts as well, but the tracks are all in that three-to-four minute mark and there isn't a weak one on here. I've pretty much been playing it non-stop for the past three days since I purchased it. My issue with metal is how repetitive some of the albums are, I just tired of being bludgeoned for 45 minutes straight. Bands like Kylesa, Baroness, and Mastodon (all from Georgia!) break that mold and are putting out some amazing stuff these days.

I'm typically a black/death metal dude with the occasional 80's metal tossed in. This band hits home though. Lately, I've enjoyed experimenting with new stuff such as Black Cobra, Devin Townsend, Minsk. I guessing it's the atmosphere. Most black metal has atmosphere as does this, but this is far from black metal,it's more 90's but way heavier than the grunge bands. The singer reminds me of Beastie Boys, Rage Against the Machine if they were into this sort of thing. The music is very moody and catchy. Ten years ago I would have laughed at such, but maybe now that I'm almost 40 I can appreciate something different and original. I'd also say to buy the original because I had the leaked version for about two weeks and it sounded like crap compared to the actual CD. I know you young folks like the free stuff, but seriously real cd's sound so much better. I do sound on indie films so I have an ear for this type of thing.

Brilliant, seductive, powerful, beautiful, transporting... this is the greatest work of Kylesa. They have evolved into profound rock n roll artists. In terms of depth and richness of vision, they're comparable to Genghis Tron as the most profound sound popular culture has produced. They've stolen my heart with this one.

I don't review albums very often. If ever if I recall correctly. But this album really stands apart from the newer metal offerings. I went to a rock show to go see Helmet and Crowbar. When I arrived these guys (and girl) were just about to start. I had just enough time to get myself a beer and then they started playing. WOW....the two drummers were totally insync and both guitar players and bassist were excellent as well. Totally enjoyed the show so I ended up buying this CD. Well I have been tricked many times at a show by drinking a few too many beers and thought a band was good when I bought their CD. So I was in no hurry to listen to it. But when I did I was impressed throughout. The album was a home run. I'm pretty set in my musical ways, but this was something new altogether for me. Killer guitar riffs, subtle Middle eastern influences, and wicked asst drumming. Not to mention that both male and female vocals are spot on. I cant guaranty that you will enjoy this album, but its pretty close to a guaranty.

The other reviews I've read really already do a great job describing this release, but Spiral Shadow is the album of the year for me. I caught Kylesa live with Torche and High On Fire. These guys tear it up live. After the show, their sound was stuck in my head so I went out and bought Spiral Shadow. Normally if a CD is great it will stay in my player for at least a week. Spiral Shadow has not only been in my CD player but also my ipod, home computer and work computer on continuous play for a little under a month now. This album has a hard rock vibe with a metal edge. It's impressive that every time I hear the album I notice something new about it. It also showcases every single instrument. There is a great variety of sound from song to song and with each listen it seems I find a new favorite. The tones they are able to get out of the guitars is nothing short of impressive. With the production and layering of tracks, they create an amazing textured full body atmosphere that pulls the listener into the music. This CD demands your full attention for the complete listening experience. No matter what is going on in my day, this album makes it more enjoyable. I'm thinking fans of Isis, Pelican, High On Fire, Converge, Baroness, Torche, Mastodon and Melvins should dig this. The best part is that these guys have a decent size catalog for me to buy when I'm ready for new music, but something tells me I'll be content with spiral shadow for some time. I know you have heard this before but do yourself a favor and buy this album for a lighter side of dark, heavy rock/metal experience that will leave a lasting impression.

I love this album start to finish. I am way into metal but not a fun of screamo, cookie monster rock. Spiral Shadow does a great job of combining soaring complex melodies with crunching aggresive guitars. I would compare Kyelsa with Mastodon because the music is somewhat similar and they seem to be progressing out of a type of metal I could not get into.
