4.0 out of 5 stars The truth about SKINHEADS
For close to a decade, many americans, and other races, have shunned the word "Skinhead" as being a foul and racist word. This book proves that theory wrong. Skinheads came about in 1969 in england. They were a youth cult. This book clearly describes all of the important facts of skinhead history. From Traditional skinheads, to S.H.A.R.P.S (Skinheads Against...

3.0 out of 5 stars More about music and fashion than anything else
Yeah the skinhead thing never really appealed to me. If this book is, as it claims to be, the definitive book on skinheads then what little doubt I have that the skinhead scene at its roots was not any kind of real world working class movement but just another teeny bopper fashion/music scene pose mixed with bullying hooliganism has been erased. I will be fair and say a...

4.0 out of 5 stars The truth about SKINHEADS, November 11, 1997
By A Customer
For close to a decade, many americans, and other races, have shunned the word "Skinhead" as being a foul and racist word. This book proves that theory wrong. Skinheads came about in 1969 in england. They were a youth cult. This book clearly describes all of the important facts of skinhead history. From Traditional skinheads, to S.H.A.R.P.S (Skinheads Against Racial Prejudice), and lets not leave out the most stereotypical, Neo-Nazi (BONEHEADS) Skinheads. From the Mods to Rude Boys. From the music they listen to to the style of dress. It even describes the type of alcohol they like. Most of all it explains the truth about Skinheads that so many people don't know or don't want to know. This book must be read by all people. It could change so many peoples minds. But I'll warn everybody, the second chapter is kind of boring. Oi Oi And happy reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great unbiased account of a severly misunderstood culture, October 31, 2002
This review is from: Spirit of '69: A Skinhead Bible (Paperback)
Spirit of 69 is a must for any skinhead (Trad or SHARP, even a nazi, maybe they'll learn their roots, or even the casual reader) It goes so in depth on the entire skinhead culture. It's so unbiased that it almost makes me mad. Marshall captures the mood and feel of the culture back in the sixties, all the way up to the rebirth in the nineties. The only flaw that I saw in the book is how deep he goes into the music in a skinhead's life. .... But still, a must. The only thing that I didn't like is that he portrays the nazi skinheads in a fair light, something that I believe they don't deserve. Anyway, have a good read.

This truly is the best book i've seen out there that tells the un-biased truth on skinheads. it cuts right to the chase and doesn't waste time with any right wing vs. left wing, bonehead vs. SHARP bs...this is about skins, true and trad. where they're from, how they got to where they are, and what makes them who they are. fasion, music, attitude, and evolution are all in this book. my only complaint is that it can be a little slow going at times, but hey! that's a price to be paid to learn historical truth about a very important and very strong cult. God bless George Marshall. Oi!

4.0 out of 5 stars 3.5 really, November 21, 2007

Like someone before me said; if you're into the skinhead scene, then there's probably not going to be a whole lot of new information here for you.

The book's a little better than average, though I expected something a bit more considering how long I waited to get a chance to rea it. This book's a bit hard to get, especially when they're selling for over $100! I secretley suspect that George Marshall himself's got a stack and sells out a couple at a time.

The style guide at the end was pretty cool.

5.0 out of 5 stars The cult that is skinhead., April 23, 1999
By A Customer
Great book... goes lengths to explain the paradox that is to be a skinhead.

Recommended to anyone getting into the life, and, to those who believe that skinhead stands for racism and hatred. It is even written colloquially for the better understanding of the latter.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great true history of the Skin "cult", April 10, 2001
By
This review is from: Spirit of '69: A Skinhead Bible (Paperback)
This is by far the best and most objective book that I've read about the skinhead culture. While Nazis and racist skins (boneheads) tend to be what the media focuses on, there is an even larger percentage of skins that are non-racial and/or anti-racist.

George Marshall cuts through the politics and gets down to the roots of the cult starting back in the late 60's and follows it up to the 90's (in the revisited version it goes to '94). This is not a "how to" book like others say, but an unbiased documentary of the culture. "Before you go waving flags, you better know what you stand for"...

5.0 out of 5 stars THE book on TRUE skinheads, October 25, 1998
By A Customer
If you have any questions on the real backgroound of skinheads or you are one of the many missinformed people that believe that the skinhead culture began with racism then you must check out this book. In my 9 years of serching this is the most accurate description of what skinhead culture is all about.

This review is from: Spirit of '69: A Skinhead Bible (Paperback)
A *must* for any skin, or anyone interested in it...I wish people would read this before jumping to conclusions about us...George Marshall should be considered the patron saint of skins. I've never read anything that I've agreed with completely until now...

This Book is great. It is the definitive skinhead book. The history is there. The best account of real skinhead culture (includes traditional non-racist skins) I have come across yet. This book could open many people's eye to what the word Skinhead really means. cheers.
