5.0 out of 5 stars A Little Drum Roll, Please
Back in the fifties, I bought these two LP albums. They gave me a great deal of enjoyment. To have them both on a single CD is a dream come true. Both the fifes and drums of "The Spirit of '76", and the drums and bugles (actu~~~y trumpets) of "Ruffles and Flourishes" are not only stirring music, but the are also a part of our nation's history. 3.0 out of 5 stars Standard fare, tho hard to find
Unless you're a historian or a music/history teacher, there probably isn't much call for Rev War military music. Not only music, but the quicksteps and command tunes used to communicate orders to the troops, both in camp and in battle.

This is an expansive collection, showcasing key tunes for both the Continentals and Her Majesty's armies. Many will easily be...

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the real deal!, September 8, 2005

Although I'm from a Navy family, I have 14 years in the Army and what you'll hear on this recording is as real as it gets because this is not "a band", this is the Commandant's Own - these are real marines and soldiers playing what they are charged with playing in their daily jobs for the Marines, for the Army, and their country.

I have the original 33 1/3 record and to find this on CD was fantastic and brought back a lot of great memories.

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly Spirited!, March 15, 2006
This review is from: The Spirit of '76 and Ruffles and Flourishes (Audio CD)
This CD not only lived up to expectations, it exceeded them. The wealth of period martial music on the album was great, with everything from marches to drum calls. As a reenactor, this provided me with essential information and really sets the mood for any event I attend. I have also used pieces as background music for gatherings and events. I am completely satisfied with the CD!

Excellent CD for the person who likes to listen to old style military marching or calvary type music. The sound quality is great and the history of each piece adds to the experience of listening to the variety of each of the 66 tracks.

4.0 out of 5 stars Three Camps, September 7, 2005
This review is from: The Spirit of '76 and Ruffles and Flourishes (Audio CD)
I am enjoying "The Spirit of '76 and Ruffles and Fourishes" a great deal; the drum patterns alond with the fife/piccolo as well as the bugle tunes are very well played. The recording quality is excellent. Most of all, I am enjoying the adherence to perpetuating the tradition of the original music. Thanks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good quality CD with a good choice of tunes, June 15, 2005
This review is from: The Spirit of '76 and Ruffles and Flourishes (Audio CD)
If you like fifes and drums, it is really an excellent quality recording with a good choice of tunes, calls, marchesand so on not only for the Revolution period, 1774-1789, but also for the civil war, 1861-1865.

This is an expansive collection, showcasing key tunes for both the Continentals and Her Majesty's armies. Many will easily be recognized as having been adopted in our native lexicon and become part of our social fabric.

2.0 out of 5 stars An incredable selection of music for the era, but mostly sound bytes., May 16, 2006
This review is from: The Spirit of '76 and Ruffles and Flourishes (Audio CD)
I am impressed my the large selection of music on the disk, but I am very disappointed by the shortness of every piece. Most of these are around 90-120 seconds each, at the longest. Several are only 30 seconds long. You are still deciding if you like the tunes when they end. If you are looking for a catalog of the music from the Revolutionary War, this is a great overview of tunes. But you will not be satisfied with the performances, owing to there brevity. Not the musicians fault, they perform wonderfully.
