This is, to say it mildly, a sleeper. How it bypassed the critics remains a mystery to me. I guess it just didn't get the promotion that many lesser acts obtain; my guess it was privately produced. Like the facets of a diamond each song stands on it's own merit. Note that Bob Ryan wrote ALL these songs, not one cover.
The mix of backup musicians gives each song an intimacy missing in many of today's overproduced extravaganzas. This CD plays well on the highway - just listen to the lyrics as they carry you through each adventure. Someone years ago wrote that "you can judge an album - yes, it's been a long time -by how many songs you carry with you when you're done listening. Well,if this holds true, I give it 5 stars. It works for me.
