Format: Paperback
Mark Shultz had done an enjoyable cadillacs and dinosaurs comic, writing and drawing with terrific verve. That was original. However, the Spirit was created by Will Eisner, and any attempt to revive the legendary master's creation will pale by comparison.

This insipid attempt is an example of the previous statement - the opening sequences not being particularly well done in order to introduce the Spirit as a menace to organised crime. The story gallops along with the Octopus (a mysterious gangleader) employing the services of an assassin to knock off the Spirit. The assassin turns out to be a woman (now why wasn't that a surprise?) and Denny Colt is treated as a male chauvinist who, in true fashion and following a kiss, has the assassin turning over a new leaf and trying to rescue him. It comes off bland, lacking the Eisner's creative turn in making this believable. Dolan and Ellen are just forgettable and Ebony, now a girl, is also lacklustre. The artwork is messy, looking like a hybrid version of Frank Miller's style.

It's sad to say that the Spirit will never be done as well by anyone else than his original creator, Will Eisner. However, that doesn't mean that this is bad by any means.

I highly enjoyed the First Wave Spirit, especially after the previous series DC did (following Darwin Cook's departure) wound up just... not that good.

Can be enjoyed, even without any knowledge of the First Wave universe.
