The 1949 stories in the latest volume of vintage Spirit exploits catch the masked crime fighter nine years into the series. Eisner, ever inventive, was still finding ways to keep things fresh, and a four-week arc sees the hero wandering exotic Pacific islands. There are some signs that Eisner may have been wearying of his headliner. In many tales here, including the celebrated "Ten Minutes," which counts down the final moments of a young man's life, the Spirit barely makes an appearance. As always, Eisner's much-imitated "cartoon noir" style finds him moving seamlessly from broad humor to high melodrama. Gordon Flagg

For me, Will Eisner's THE SPIRIT represents the EVOLUTION of the comic book language over the 20Th century! Eisner took all that's being done in comics before him - in the late thirties - and started to MIX the cinematic language - specially the NOIR's - with comics and , eventually, THE SPIRIT was WAY BEYOND that. If you read this volume, you will know why they call this tittle THE CITZEN KANE of comics! Hal Foster's Prince Valiant's art is beautifull and Alex Raymond's Flash Gordon is a visionary series in MANY ways, but, to me , Will Eisner's THE SPIRIT represents ALL THAT COMICS MEDIUM should be:inteligent,fun and, most of all, REVOLUTIONARY!! And all that stuff in a DELUXE package! Thank you,DC!!
