Book Description

Spirit Archives May 1, 2001
In the fourth installment of the Spirit Archive series, the costumed crimefighter continues to join the Allied forces in their fight against the Axis powers. As his last work on these Sunday strips before being inducted into the army for World War II, Eisner brings real world elements into his stories as the Spirit gets involved in spy and espionage games with the Squid, Silk Satin, and Madam Minx. Collecting the Sunday strips from January 4 - June 28, 1942, these tales also include two very special "army operas" and an appearance by Eisner himself as he aids the Spirit in solving a perplexing mystery.

More About the Author

WILL EISNER was born William Erwin Eisner on March 6, 1917 in Brooklyn, New York. By the time of his death on January 3, 2005, Will Eisner was recognized internationally as one of the giants in the field of sequential art, a term he coined.

In a career that spanned nearly eight decades -- from the dawn of the comic book to the advent of digital comics - Will Eisner was truly the 'Orson Welles of comics' and the 'father of the Graphic Novel'. He broke new ground in the development of visual narrative and the language of comics and was the creator of The Spirit, John Law, Lady Luck, Mr. Mystic, Uncle Sam, Blackhawk, Sheena and countless others.

During World War II, Will Eisner used the comic format to develop training and equipment maintenance manuals for the US Army. After the war this continued as the Army's "PS Magazine" which is still being produced today. Will Eisner taught Sequential Arts at the New York School of Visual Arts. The textbooks that he wrote based on his course are still bestsellers. In 1978, Will Eisner wrote "A Contract with God," the first modern Graphic Novel. This was followed by almost 20 additional graphic novels over the following 25 years.

The "Oscars" of the Comic Industry are called The Eisner Awards, and named after Will Eisner. The Eisners are presented annually before a packed ballroom at Comi-Con International in San Diego, America's largest comics convention.

Wizard magazine named Eisner "the most influential comic artist of all time." Michael Chabon's Pulitzer-prize winning novel "Kavalier and Clay" is based in good part on Eisner. In 2002, Eisner received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Federation for Jewish Culture, only the second such honor in the organization's history, presented by Pulitzer-prize winning cartoonist Art Spiegelman.

4.0 out of 5 stars This story has a happy ending!, October 6, 2005

This review is from: The Spirit Archives, Vol. 4 (Hardcover)
All The Spirit comics from January to June, 1942. Spirit creator Will Eisner was in the service at the time, so the comic was largely done by his assistants. Solid crimefighter comics, but the really great stuff was to come later.

5.0 out of 5 stars Every story in volume 4 is by Eisner, January 24, 2011
This review is from: The Spirit Archives, Vol. 4 (Hardcover)
Some corrections need to be made to some of the other reviews of Spirit Archives. The first Spirit story that was not written, penciled and inked by Will Eisner appeared on May 3, 1942, about 2/3 of the way through Spirit Archive volume 4. The May 3 story, like all the later stories in volume 4, was written and laid out by Eisner, who also probably did some pencils, and perhaps even a little inking. But most of the penciling on this and other May and June stories was done by Lou Fine and inks were by Fine and various assistants. Some of these stories are better than anything in the first 3 Archives. So don't pass on this volume. It is all excellent work. If you liked the first 3 volumes, you are going to like this. The front cover to volume 4, taken from the June 7 splash panel, is almost certainly the work of Lou Fine, based on a layout by Eisner. If you like Eisner, this is not to be missed.

Comprehensive writing and art credits for the whole run of the Spirit, unfortunately lacking in the Archives themselves, are available on the internet.

3.0 out of 5 stars The Spirit Archives Series, April 3, 2004

This review is from: The Spirit Archives, Vol. 4 (Hardcover)
Will Eisner is the only comic book artist to ever have his work shown in a museum of art. His most important work is the Spirit. The Spirit Archives series has brought together all of his work, that was printed in a weekly newspaper insert. However, after the work found in volumes 1 and 2, Eisner was called to active duty and served in the army during World War II. The Spirit carried on, but it was drawn by other artists. Eisner's work does not pick up again until the stories found in Volume 12 of the Archives series. The work in Volumes 3-11 is fine, but it is not the work of Will Eisner.
