Book Description

November 1, 1987
"Howard Ervin's Spirit Baptism (a revision of his earlier, These Are Not Drunken, As Ye Suppose) is a fine, scholarly examination of biblical and theological foundations of the Pentecostal baptism in the Holy Spirit and the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Ervin does an outstanding job of demonstrating that Spirit baptism in the New Testament relates not to conversion or sanctification but to charismatic empowerment. Spirit Baptism is a much needed contribution to Evangelical and Pentecostal understanding and a challenge to the church at large for a genuine spiritual renewal."
—J. Rodman Williams, Ph.D., Professor of Theology, CBN University

Spirit Baptism: A Biblical Investigation is a substantial revision of Dr. Ervin's classic, These Are Not Drunken, As Ye Suppose. A pioneer in the Pentecostal/Charismatic movement, Dr. Ervin provides one of the best exegetical studies of the biblical basis for the reality of Spirit baptism.

A word-by-word analysis of the Greek text of those passages germane to the doctrine of Spirit baptism makes this indispensable for any student of NT pneumatology or the modern Pentecostal/Charismatic discussion. Whether one accepts the validity of Dr. Ervin's conclusions or not, Spirit Baptism: A Biblical Investigation, is an important work which should not be ignored.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Classic for Pentecostal Pastors/Teachers, April 28, 2004
This review is from: Spirit Baptism: A Biblical Investigation (Paperback)
Dr. Howard Ervin destroys the myth that Pentecostal theologians don't wrestle with the Scriptures but rely upon personal experience to define and defend the baptism in the Holy Spirit. Dr. Ervin relies upon his vast knowledge of the Greek New Testament and Pentecostal theology to biblically define and defend the Pentecostal teaching on the baptism in the Holy Spirit with the initial, physical evidence of speaking in tongues.

Whether you are a seasoned Pentecostal pastor/teacher or a non-Pentecostal theological student, you will enjoy Dr. Ervin's work on Spirit Baptism.
