So-So Documentary, Repetitive, November 28, 2011
This review is from: Spirit of Bebop (DVD)
Barry Harris is my favorite living pianist. What I'd love to have are some DVDs of him simply playing piano, both solo and with his preferred trio. I don't know of ANY published video of him doing this. This DVD provides almost none of that -- rather, it's a documentary about his wonderful work as a jazz educator, with one student after another going on and on and on and on and on about how wonderful he is as an educator and mentor. That's in addition to lots of material showing him doing it. I GET IT. A few times is enough.
Yes, he's a great jazz educator, and he should be sainted for his contributions to the music. He's also a wonderful composer -- I've watched a recital by more than a hundred of his students in Milwaukee about 20 years ago. It was lovely, and he obviously made a huge difference in the lives of a lot of people. But let us see and hear Barry playing his music. PLEASE!
