5.0 out of 5 stars Shows When Level for Landscape & Portrait
The level is inserted into the hotshoe. Once attached, the camera can be made level regardless if the tripod is.

This level is beneficial over others because it has levels along three planes, so it will show whether the camera is level when the camera is in landscape or when angled to portrait.

I purchased two of these and both came in fine...

1.0 out of 5 stars I'd give it a zero if I could
I purchased this three months ago and one of the three chambers already lost most of its fluid, rendering it useless along that axis. I'd avoid this manufacturer's product.

It really should be rated as a 0 star. Wide markings that really make it useless. Bad unfinished connector it is hard to attach and remove from the hot shoe. Avoid this company read my review for release cable it has been dumped. The level is on it's way to a land fill and will be replaced with a real unit.

I purchased two of these and both came in fine condition. For any photographer who wants a cheap tool to ensuring your camera is level, this is a good product.

1.0 out of 5 stars This level isn't level, February 27, 2010

I bough this for D700. It is nice in theory, however, the holes they drilled inside of the cube, to hold the fluid, are not level! The horizontal one has a slight downward angle to it. When I level my camera according to this level, it isn't level. Garbage. Spend a little more and get the one from manfrotto.

the item barely fits into the hot shoe. you really have to push to get it half-way in. then it is usable. filing it down yourself might defeat the purpose.

1.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't fit onto the hot shoe properly, March 25, 2010

I had a bear of a time putting this on my hot shoe, then once it was on I figured I would see how easy it would be to take it off. Again, total nightmare getting it off. So that was that -- put it back in the box and returned to Amazon. The previous spirit level I used, also from this company, slides on and off like you would expect so I'll be going back to that model. It was the 2-way level.

I should have read the reviews! This is a very poorly make waste of $10. Not one of the three chambers was level. One was off 4 degrees. Even worse, they were all misshapen and bulging in one way or another. Stay away from anything with the Opteka brand and buy a real level!

Zero stars!

2.0 out of 5 stars Requires modification, August 24, 2011

Without using more force than I care to put on my camera this would not fit in the hot shoe. It required me to take some very fine emery paper to take off enough plastic for it to fit without excessive force. Even though I sanded it using a flat sheet of metal there's the possibility that the bottom face of the cube is no longer true to the other sides which negates the purpose. This wasn't an expensive item but as with most Chinese imports don't expect precision or workmanship.

I opened the box and placed this cube on my desk, which I know to be level. Whoa! It was way out of level. But then I checked it against an accurate construction level, and I learned the secret. Relative to the hot-shoe (as it's designed to be used) it's reasonably accurate. Where it's *not* accurate is when using the sides of the cube. I'm not sure why it's so far out-of-level using the cube edges, but I guess that doesn't matter in the intended application. On the other hand, it does suggest that there may be unit-to-unit differences, so you should check yours when it arrives.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very useful, but be careful qith quality control, April 13, 2010

This is the most useful cheap gadget you can get for landscape photography.
It shows correct level in both horizontal and vertical framing, in a very compact design.

However.... the first unit I got was misaligned, but seller 'HDE' promptly sent a replacement unit, no cost, and tested before shipping. (Great seller, by the way, highly recommended).
So, get one, but be very careful about quality control.
