5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring and healing!, October 4, 2003
This review is from: The Spirit Can Crest (Paperback)
For anyone who has experienced deep loss, and especially one who has lost a family member to AIDS or another terrible disease, this poetry book is a journey well worth taking.
Steven Riel leads us through his childhood struggles with his younger brother, their adult counterpoint as two very different [alternative lifestyle] men, his brother's illness and death, and his own grief and healing with immense depth and clarity. Other poems about Emily Dickinson and selections from "13 Ways of Looking at my Effeminacy" illuminate [alternative lifestyle] culture and [alternative lifestyle] oppression with sensitivity and humor.
I am always profoundly touched by Stevens poetry, and this book illustrates some of his finest craft, drawing me into his images and always coming up with deeper understanding and compassion. It's definitely a keeper!
