Product Description

During a pleasure dive on a rare vacation off the coast of Florida, renowned treasure hunter Sam Johnson and beloved wife Taylor stumble upon the wreck of a sunken Spanish galleon. Though her sinking took place over four hundred years ago, she looks as if she just hit bottom after her fateful trip from the surface.

What they discover on the La Majestad del Mar is the Holy Grail of marine archaeology, the wood-carved signature of Sir Francis Drake.

On their way to the surface, Taylor is fatally attacked by the gigantic ghost of a great white shark. After pulling her free and past him toward the surface, Sam barely escapes from the grasp of the shark's jaws. It seems to be affected by the sunlight above.

Six years later... Sam returns home, officially retired from treasure hunting. He takes on the responsibility of a marine laboratory to keep busy and keep his mind off the tragic events of the past.

Sam cannot get the wreck out of his mind. The carving of Drake's signature dominates his thoughts. Images of the Majesty's oar hold, a floating bone-yard, haunt his dreams.

The colorful entries of the captain's log, recovered by Taylor, will guide him, describing the events that lead up to the sinking of the noble galleon. Sam's old high school buddy will do anything to recover the gold, which, if removed from the bow, could cause the balancing galleon to plummet to the bottom of the abyss.

So Sam Johnson has to ask himself, is a piece of wood really worth it? His answer might bewilder some, but this, to him, was more than just a piece of wood...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great job, TJ Waite!, February 14, 2011

In complete agreeance with first review, though will add something of my own here.

It's not only well researched and put together, it's almost believable in its entirety. I, too, was grabbed in the first chapter and did not want to stop till I was finished. The conclusion of the story doesn't seem ONLY to end the story, satisfies a moral justice not seen too often in our real world. And might we see a sequel?

4.0 out of 5 stars Things That Go Swish In the Night..., July 11, 2010

This review is from: Spirit Deep (Paperback)
"Spirit Deep" is a perfect summer beach read, and not just because it's set in Florida. It grabs a hold of you from the first couple of chapters, and doesn't let go until the very satisfying conclusion. I am not going to go into details too much, as I hate when people give away everything in their reviews.

Suffice it to say, the characters are memorable, and, more importantly, relate-able and real. You want Sam Johnson and his son Bret to push past the tragedy that has shaped their lives. You can feel Sam's terror at the thought of going after the piece of wood that bears Sir Francis Drake's signature, but you can also feel his desire to go and get that artifact.

Mr. Waite has done his research, and it shows in the story. The settings, the characters and the story all mesh together almost perfectly. "Spirit Deep" is worth the read.
