Not Your Typical Chant CD,
This review is from: My Spirit Flies to You (Audio CD)
It's not your Typical Chant CD
It's an interesting mixture of modern English-language pop music and Tibetan chants. As a Buddhist, I find the mixture to be inoffensive on a religious level. I was won over by the execution. It is an exceptionally well-crafted effort. I was particularly struck by track Four, "River of light," which features the Seven Line Prayer to Guru Rinpoche. It is clear and really quite 'catchy.' The same can be said for many of the songs on this CD. "I Wanna Fly" features the Mantra from the Heart Sutra, (AKA the Wisdom Mantra or the Emptiness Mantra). Many tracks feature well-known mantras or prayers, including the 100 Syllable Mantra of Vajrasattva, Mahakala Mantra, and The Short Refuge Prayer, among others. I believe that the Mantras and prayers here are treated with respect and affection. At the same time, it is something that I hope could get some 'air time' on some radio stations. I like it.

Very creative employment of Tibetan mantra chants. Set against pop and new age grooves, I can't decide if this represents a defilement or a celebration in modern terms of the chants. I do know that if I had never heard a chant before, this introduction would have turned me on to it. I love the music and some tracks I can't sit still to. My favorite is track 2 that uses the White Tara chant: Energy Rising, I think it's named.

This is the most unique and enjoyable Buddhist CD I've heard. It's not totally calm though. It has a sort of calm intensity to it. Highly recommended!

When I found this album, I was enthralled within moments. The combination of Tibetan chants and all sorts of music is amazingly intriguing and a lot of fun. Now everyone I know is into it. The music and the mantras move you whether you understand the Tibetan or not.

En-chanting,
This review is from: My Spirit Flies to You (Audio CD)
The Buddhist Monks seamlessly blends Tibetan Buddhist chants with infectious melodies and uplifiting lyrics to create one of the best New Age recordings of 2006.
Featuring the voices of the Buddhist monks of the Sakya Tashi Ling Monastery (outside Barcelona, Spain) captured in a ceremony of 10-hour continuous chanting, producers Sergio Medrano and Miguel González have mixed the voices into a world pop gumbo of sitar, tabla, guitars, piano, and synthesizer that will be familiar to fans of Enigma or Deep Forest. More than just a simple mixing project, Medrano and González show some feel for the source material, basing the rhythm of a few songs on the rhythms of the chants, as in Secret Energy or River of Light. More often the chants function as another instrument layered in on 3-4 minute recordings ranging in style from light dance (Mystic Energy) to ambient (Woman's Energy). The stand-out tracks are the pop numbers - My Spirit Flies To You, The Other Side, I Wanna Fly - delicious confections of English lyrics, the refreshing voice of Verónica Concepción, and some clever hooks incorporating bits of chant. If you like melodic New Age with a bit of rhythm and world music flourishes, if you like Deep Forest or Enigma, if you enjoy music that makes you want to sing along with the recording, if you like uplifiting lyrics, then take the time to listen to this recording at least once. Chances are, you'll listen again and again. It might even, as the monks of Sakya Tashi Ling hope, change your life. #

I was given a sample CD with the first two songs and was hooked. The more I listen to this CD the more it makes me feel good, and light, and connected. I love painting to this music. I choreographed a three person belly dance to the title song, it is somehow soft yet powerful, does great things to the spirit and the body.

Quite the misleading title as this is disco-drone. If it is true that all things must pass it would be better to pass this one by. |
