"A self-help guide to the Native American spiritual growth process.... Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Atwood has produced a self-help guide to the Native American spiritual growth process. Each chapter opens with a vignette describing a spiritual growth step in the lives of fictional Native American characters, and concludes with instructions to the reader on achieving this stage of development. Readers are given directions on how to discover their own places of power, auras, power animals, healing powers, and other elements of personal spirituality, attainable even if one lives in a modern urban setting. More of a handbook than a story, this title would work well with Jamie Sams and Twyla Nitsch's Other Council Fires Were Here Before Ours ( LJ 10/1/91). Public libraries will find an audience with those adults interested in Native American philosophy and New Age enthusiasts.

About the Author

Mary Dean Atwood, Ph.D. is a clinical psychologist and unabashed mystic who has lived primarily in Oklahoma, Arizona, and New Mexico. She combines an eastern/western blend of spiritual knowledge and meditative practices. She began her research into Native American herbs and rituals twenty-five years ago and developed the ability to see into "second physical", and interpret signs of nature. She was privileged to study with anthropologist Michael Harner, Ph.D. and Lakota Medicine Man, Gary Bear Heals. A few years later she began the study of Eastern religions and today meditates using Kriya Yoga which originated in the United States with Pramahansa Yogananda. She still uses Native American practices and is a natural health and "green planet" advocate.

I am a licensed clinical psychologist in Oklahoma and New Mexico with reciprocity in over a dozen other states. I have been interested in helping people all my life and have done intensive study in Native American spiritual practices and healing methods as well as Eastern Religious meditations, and spirituality of both Hindu and Buddhism. I am the author of ,Spirit Healing: How to Make Your Life Work as well as Spirit Healing: Native American Magic and Medicine and Spirit Herbs. My web site is www.Spirithealingmakeyourlifework.com As a clinical psychologist, I have worked with people of all ages with varying problems. I have studied natural, and holistic methods of healing and alternative medicine for 35 years and believe that health problems are the result of the mind, body, and spirit needing attention. Beginning to work on healing on one area naturally helps the other two if INTENT and an attempt to join with the DIVINE are present.

4.0 out of 5 stars The beauty of simplicity and absolute faith, July 24, 2000
This review is from: Spirit Healing: Native American Magic & Medicine (Paperback)
Spirit Healing is a story and a guide. Alternate chapters tell the story of Native American girl's journey to womanhood and the status of shaman, and present Native symbols, ceremonies, and rituals, explained and adopted for use in the modern world. The book explains the incredible power of faith and ritual in the art of healing and obtaining the abilitiy to manfest a desired reality. The basis of this spiritul power is absolute simplicity--live in harmony with the Creator, the universe, and the Earth, respect all living things both plant and animal, and practice absolute faith. The results can be magical and even miraculous. It is a delightful read, a little book containing directions for obtaining tremendous spiritual power which can then be directed for the greater good of all. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pageturner, June 19, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Spirit Healing: Native American Magic & Medicine (Paperback)
I was looking for a book that would describe native american magical systems and healing practices. I find Atwood's work to be excellent and thurough. This book is excellent for a beginner's introduction to magical arts including crystals, aura/chakra, healing, and herbs. Each section is introduced with the story of a shaman in training. The stories provide examples and help to clarify the arts described. I really enjoyed this book and still enjoy it whenever i get it back from my friends. They insist on borrowing it. I highly reccomend this book and hope that its readers find it as useful as I do.

4.0 out of 5 stars fictional story of a shaman combined w/nonfictional info, August 5, 2004
This review is from: Spirit Healing: Native American Magic & Medicine (Paperback)
One chapter is the fictional story of a young Native American girl, who is learning to become a shaman; the next chapter gives you notes on the lessons being learned by the young girl. That's the format of this book, cover to cover. It's kind of a guide, to teach you what Native American shamanism was like historically, and how to apply some of that knowledge in your own life.

I enjoyed the book, overall, but I am willing to retain the information I find believable and useful, leaving behind any information that sounds sort of goofy. The fictional portion of the book was mildly entertaining, though a bit idealistic.
