Book Description

In the hills of Tennessee, Shane Carson, a gifted, nationally-recognized horseman, is living the good life. When a mysterious mustang shows up on his farm, Shane doesn’t know how—or why—the horse appeared, but the horse’s distinctive brand identifies her. She is one of the Spirit Horses, a rare, wild herd that runs free on the Shoshone reservation in Wyoming. Watched over for centuries in the tribe’s ancestral valleys, these exquisite horses, according to belief, provide a link to the afterlife.

When tragedy strikes in his life, Shane nearly loses his will to live—but for one promise he made to his young son: to return the mustang to her rightful home.

On this bittersweet journey, Shane finds a world where tradition reigns, and ancient beliefs transcend modern logic. In this magnificent expanse of blue sky and wide open spaces, love is alive, but hate, intolerance, and greed threaten to close in.

To make good on his vow, Shane must face the danger that threatens these horses, the tribe’s legacy, and his destiny.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not just for the horse lover February 19, 2012
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This is a fantastic book. I've already recommended it to all of the horse lovers I know. It is such a treat to find a novel with horses in it in which the author gets the horse stuff right.

However, this book isn't just for people who know and love horses. Yes, horses play an integral role in the story, but the story isn't really "about" horses. Spirit Horses is about love, loss, and how people deal with, survive, and grow in the face of tragedy and hardship.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves horses and to anyone who wants to read a novel that ultimately offers a positive outlook on the ability of people to not only survive tragedy but find some happiness and purpose in its wake.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful heartfelt story September 5, 2009
Format:Hardcover
This is a wonderful story, simply told. It's a heartfelt story and the reader is easily transported into it. I clearly felt the pain of the main character, understood his need to "do right" by the mustang mare, and enjoyed the suspense along the way. And the ending, while it makes perfect sense, was completely unexpected. I was pleasantly surprised and impressed by this first novel from a new author.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good promise, not fulfilled June 24, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I got this book with a Kindle special and was excited because of the description and wonderful reviews. A mixture of Shoshone culture, in a beautiful setting, with horses, romance and a bit of mystery - what's not to like? Unfortunately, the clunky writing really got in my way. Mr. Evans writes best when he is describing the landscape and horses, but he stumbles when trying the write dialogue and misses completely when setting up both the central romance and the conflict. At one point, when the "bad guys" clink glasses and say, "to unlimited wealth and power - let nothing stand in our way!" I literally laughed out loud. And when he admits at the end that some of the Shoshone language and legends (a central part of the plot) were made up, I felt deceived. There is a lot of promise here. I hope he can find a good editor to help fulfill that promise.

5.0 out of 5 stars Engrossing July 6, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I love to read, but this is the first review that I have written. This is one of a couple of books that I would recommend to my friends. I don't know much about horses, but I like to imagine that there are people who can show them the love and patience to train them the way the main character of this story did and the way he taught others to do. The descriptions made me wish that I could see the scenes described. The story was engrossing and covered great loss and the pain that comes with it, and the process of rising out of it and allowing himself to live again. I don't want to include spoilers, so I will just say that I think horse lovers and people who are not horse lovers will enjoy this story. There is a romance involved, but no explicit scenes. It takes place partly on the Wind River Reservation in Wyoming, and tells about the Shoshone Indians and another group who share the reservation. It seemed realistic and the author said that he did extensive research. The characters were realistic and I would have liked to know them. I definitely give this 5 stars. I got it several weeks ago for free on Amazon, but it is good enough that I would definitely pay to read it.

5.0 out of 5 stars No spoilers in my review April 7, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
First, let me say that while some authors give long winded descriptions of scenes and it makes me want to scream, the descriptions used in this book did not elicit that effect from me. They set up scenery in a way that put me right there with Shane and the rest of the characters, and it was a very nice surprise! As for the typos mentioned by someone else, admittedly, that usually gets under my skin, but there really were very few errors, so I can live with it because the book, as a whole, was beautiful!

I've loved and ridden horses for the better part of my life and while this book certainly appeals to the horse lovers, it will also appeal to anyone. Another reviewer described it as, "a modern day cowboys and indians and big bad rich man, horse whisperer type trainer, romance kinda story, very horse related with a little bit of indian spirituality." This is a wonderful way to describe it! The friendships, the tragedies, the happiness, the sadness, there's every emotion in this book, and it's going on my "shelf" as one of my all time favorite books, and I intend to gift this to friends, in the future.

I purposely read this book slowly because I know when I get completely engrossed in a story, I read it in a few short hours and am left angry with myself for having done so. I'm so glad I made this a long process, reading just a little bit each night. I was able to enjoy and savor the book, and I'll be able to grab my kindle and do it again when I need my Shane fix.

Mr. Evans, Thanks so much for a wonderful read and a job well done! Your imagination is incredible! I think this book would make an incredible movie, by the way! But they'd need to stay true to the book and not change it around too much, like so many movies end up doing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great characters and storyline March 31, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
This book makes you think it's going to be another local color family story but then things start to change. This author is so visually descriptive of the settings and characters that it draws you right into the moments in the story. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and look forward to reading additional books from this author.
