5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful heartfelt story
This is a wonderful story, simply told. It's a heartfelt story and the reader is easily transported into it. I clearly felt the pain of the main character, understood his need to "do right" by the mustang mare, and enjoyed the suspense along the way. And the ending, while it makes perfect sense, was completely unexpected. I was pleasantly surprised and impressed by...

2.0 out of 5 stars too explanatory
Good story line; however, I felt that the writing in this book was very amateurish....author seemed to go to great lengths to describe everything (lots of redundancy). I prefer writers to paint a picture in my head....this one left nothing to the imagination....way too descriptive....even with the characters' feelings. If you lose your family, of course you are going to...

This book is the kind of book that you don't want to put down. I experienced every emotion as I read this amazing story. It is the kind of story that puts you right in the middle of the pages and you feel that you are with Shane Carson on this incredible journey. The descriptions of the reservation are breathtaking and the ending is one I did not expect. I would reccomend this book to anyone who has ever cared about another person or animals.

5.0 out of 5 stars great second chance at life, April 11, 2009
This review is from: Spirit Horses (Hardcover)
In 1996 in Cheatham County, Tennessee Shane Carson believes he lives the perfect life. He loves his wife Jen, their preadolescent kids Jacob and Tina and the horses he raises; and loves his work as a horse trainer and has earned a well deserved reputation as one of the best

Mrs. Erickson drops off a feisty mare she bought at auction from a cranky owner. She asks Shane to "start" the spirited Mustang and when ready find the steed a home with caring people. Shane realizes the animal is part of the legendary Spirit Horse herd roaming the Shoshone reservation in Wyoming. After a tragic accident caused by a man running a light kills his wife and kids in a car crash, Shane drinks away his grief until he recalls the promise he made to his son to return the Spirit Horse to his home. He escorts the horse back to her Wyoming home and makes friends amongst the Shoshone especially Chief Tigee and his granddaughter Tara while making enemies when he helps the tribe with a danger that threatens them and the herd.

With a touch of whimsy, this is a great story of a man reeling from a sudden tragedy that wiped out his beloved family, but finds redemption with the horses he loves. The strong characterizations especially the support players like his mother-in-law and his friend a ranch hand enhance a deep look into the soul of a person who was living heaven on earth until the vehicle accident moved him into hell until he finds a second chance at life through his love of horses.

I just finished reading "Spirit Horses" after having it on my ipad for a month. I am still crying after the ending, but to be trite, it is a good crying. A man beset with loss still keeps faith with his beliefs and follows the path of preservation and right rather than succumbing to the path of least resistence. A horse trainer rather than a horse breaker must overcome loss and sorrow to save a herd of Shoshone horses which can be traced back to Sacawajia and beyond.

I prefer writers to paint a picture in my head....this one left nothing to the imagination....way too descriptive....even with the characters' feelings. If you lose your family, of course you are going to be sad, withdrawn, and unable to share your pain with virtual strangers. I don't need to be told this ten times throughout the book.

theres suspense, drama and descriptions that make you want to go there!

I was captivated from the first chapter. Mr Evans weaves a wonderful story around a horseman, Shane Carson the main character, and his connection the the Shoshone Indians of Wyoming and their beloved mustangs. His life is intertwined with plight of the mustangs, and the story is full of wonderful descriptions of the rugged lands of the indians, their customs and spiritual connections to these horses. My first thought is that it would make a great movie.
