Book Description

November 1999
Thirty years ago Mickey Hart started researching and gathering information on music. His studio walls eventually became covered by these powerful insights about music, resembling a glowing anaconda that had coiled itself along the walls.

Mickey Hart, along with Fred Lieberman, shares these gems from the musical treasure chest the anaconda has guarded all these years. Hart also offers his own insights about the origin and power of music and the sacred ability of music to transform the human spirit.

"Music becomes the language of God in the Ears of the believer, a new language, a secret call." - Mickey Hart

Amazon.com Review

In Spirit into Sound: The Magic of Music, a magical collection of inspirational quotes, former Grateful Dead member Mickey Hart and ethnomusicologist Fredric Lieberman explore what it is about music that gives it the power to heal, or simply to transform an everyday moment into something of spiritual importance. Over 200 VIPs such as Albert Schweitzer, Billy Joel, Janis Joplin, Woody Guthrie, and Joan Baez contribute to four different subject areas: "Music and Musicians," "Music and Society," "Music and Spirit," and "Music and the Cosmos." The oversize print makes this an easy read, and its artsy layout makes it a great gift for music lovers. Nietzsche once said, "Without music, life would be a mistake--I would only believe in a god who knew how to dance." --P. Randall Cohan

"Come walk with Mickey in Bakundan's garden. Learn the difference between noise and music, and between music and magic." -- Jerry Garcia

5.0 out of 5 stars an extravagant beauty of a book, December 8, 1999
By
the sparrowhawk (attending the carnival of surface) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Spirit Into Sound: The Magic of Music (Paperback)
this book affirms the importance of music as a part of the human spiritual journey. the remarkable preface by fredric lieberman is a deeply moving description of how he came to decide to become a professional musician, and this preface sets the tone for the book.

the book itself reminds the reader that music is a paradox; a deeply unsettling and centering artform, and not merely the background noise for our daily activities.

there are quotes here from musicians of all practices and allegiances. i keep my copy around to clean out my head when the world is too much with me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic survey of quotes by musicians and music lovers, November 6, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Spirit Into Sound: The Magic of Music (Paperback)
This is a great survey of quotes by musicians and music lovers about music. It really helps the reader understand what it is that propels musicians to compose, and why music is so moving to the listener.

5.0 out of 5 stars CAPTURES THE MAGIC, December 18, 1999
This review is from: Spirit Into Sound: The Magic of Music (Paperback)
It is hard to put into words how deeply music affects our spirit... and long documentary books on music don't seem to cut it, at a feeling level. This book is a choice collection of various quotes and "takes" on music and the music experience. As someone for whom playing music (and listening to others play music) is a profound part of my life.....giving me joy, keeping my energy stress-free, sharing with friends...this book is a huge validation of all the beautiful things music does for us! It's one of those books you can flip to any part of, and lift your day just by reading a page or two. Leave it out for your visiting friends! It's a great gift idea for any music lover.
