1.0 out of 5 stars One of the better Confunkshun albums
Spirit of love shows the collective strength of this very talented group and the strong lead vocals of Michael Vernon Cooper. Each song is melodic and personal, and keeps you moving. From the spirited "Got to be enough" to the soft "All up to you." An old school lesson in real music and a must have for funk music lovers of all ages.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Spirit Of High Quality Retro Funky Soul, August 15, 2005
This review is from: Spirit of Love (Audio CD)
Having already long ago fully digested what Con Funk Shun albums are in print (I have their two greatest hits volumes and two studio albums)'Spirit Of Love' comes as wonderful surprise from 1980.The 'hit' "Got To Be Enough" is very indicative of most of this album-smooth,uptempo funky soul in the heavy EWF'ish mode CFS do so well. The title cut and "Happy Face" follow suit. That's because these people can WRITE THE HELL out of a song! And I think the final cut "Lovestruck 1980" is great-a very clever fusion of horn heavy funk groove and eurodisco production elements-kind of Con Funk Shun's answer to "Boogie Wonderland".
As is more then indicated by their name their is still room for rootsy funk on "Curtain Call" and smooth 'quiet storm' balladry on "Honey Wild".The music on 'Spirit Of Love' will make you want to do a dance, bop your head, move from side to side and it might even woo you and your lover in parts. After all isn't that what this kind of music is all about. For the serious music fan the instrumentation here is so fantastic you'll be in awe of that too.So this really works in all areas.

5.0 out of 5 stars I lived this Era!, December 21, 2005
This review is from: Spirit of Love (Audio CD)
I grew up with ConFunkShun, Bros Johnson, LTD, the Blackbyrds, Ohio Players, BT Express, and on and on and on. This music was my life and now 27 years later as I go back online trying to find the CD versions of the original vinyl that I had of all my favorites, it takes me back to my childhood, Jr. High and High School and those precious early twenties.. in this era of hot and fun music. Music that was sexy and exciting and so different from today. It stands out and you can tell when you hear it. I still have my original vinyl collection that I started at age 15. A friend turned me onto this genre and it is still my number one. Confunkshun, of course was one of those I partied with and all the songs bring back such wonderful memories of my past. Festival seating concerts sans lipsynching, Cruising, great kegs, hot nights, long summers, freedom...Music will never be like this again. I'm so glad I was able to experience this.

What can I say. Back in the day, CON FUNK SHUN definitely was "no joke". Within their stream of works there were six classic-albums that no serious R&B collection would be complete without and "SPIRIT OF LOVE" is one of them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Con Funk Shun - the bomb, March 15, 2007
This review is from: Spirit of Love (Audio CD)
Definitive funk album of the early eighties. this was the first con funk shun album I heard when still a teenager. I loved the album then and hearing it again after so many years brought back memories of my cousin and i playing the LP on his old record player! The 1st tune "Got to be enough" is my favourite whilst "spirit of love" was the most popular. Its amazing when listen to music today and realise just how good the funk of old was and still is!
