Book Description

July 1, 2004
In "Spirit Medicine", Dr. Wesselman is joined by his wife, transpersonal medical practitioner Jill Kuykendall, RPT, to present us with a cross-cultural consideration of illness, healing, and health care from the ancient wisdom of the traditional peoples. "Spirit Medicine" opens a window into a universal worldview that will help you: understand the classic causes of illness which is an essential step in true healing; work with the four levels of spiritual healing; expand your connections to inner sources of wisdom and power; and deepen your contacts with your helping spirits and healing masters. Included is an experiential CD of shamanic drumming and rattling to be used with specific exercises and meditations designed to enhance your healing practice for yourself and others.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Shamanic healers view illness as caused by negative internal states--disharmony, fear, and soul loss. An illness may follow an external "intrusion" (e.g., bacteria), but the real problem is "the diminishment of our personal power or the holes torn in the fabric of our soul that allowed the intrusion to enter." The concept of spirit medicine, while foreign to most Western health practitioners, is familiar to indigenous peoples. A guide to facilitating self-healing, Spirit Medicine starts by examining the perspective of Hawaiian kahumas (healers) and concepts such as soul cluster, spirit soul, and body soul. Wesselman and Kuykendall lead you through the principles of spirit medicine and gently invite you to explore. Experiential exercises--"healing journeys"--include creating a sacred garden and the spirit-medicine dance. This is no instant self-help plan; rather, an introduction to journeywork, which takes commitment and patience. Wesselman, an anthropologist, has worked with indigenous peoples and documented his visionary experiences. He is the author of The Journey to the Sacred Garden. His wife Kuykendall is a physical therapist and transpersonal medical practitioner who worked for 20 years in Western medicine and now specializes in soul retrieval. This content-packed, little book includes an hour-long CD of drumming/ rattling. The authors explain that the steady, rhythmic sound enables the body soul to respond and consciousness to expand into spiritual realms, with practice. --Joan Price

An absolutely superb book. Good for anyone already in a Shamanic path or for someone who knows nothing about it.

Hank and Jill's explanations of the material are first rate.

The accompanying CD and suggested exercises are very useful.

I would recomend this book to anyone wanting to know and/or experience more of Shamanism.

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful book and CD, November 10, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Spirit Medicine (Hardcover)
This book goes into more depth than The Secret Garden as to healing states and knowledge that Hank and his wife Jill have gained form their experiences with Hawaiian kahunas and healers. This book is packed with information and a CD designed to help one experience the book's contents. A worthwhile addition to the bookshelves of anyone interested in healing, journeying, shamanism or Hawaiian healing and spiritual belief, no matter how many book one has on these topics.

5.0 out of 5 stars A welcome Christmas gift, December 14, 2007
This review is from: Spirit Medicine (Hardcover)
I bought 'Spirit Medicine'as a gift for a friend who has a keen interest in Shamanic work. She was feeling a bit down and I gave it to her earlier than planned. Well, she dived into it and devoured it! She loves this book, which she says has given her a new lease of life and has definitely set her on the road to Shamanc work, herself.
