Editorial Reviews

Review

"How does one thank someone for a very special gift shared from the soul? Your book was truely what I needed, it got me through one of the worst times. With your life forces with me, I could feel the blessing surrounding me and adding to my own beliefs in myself and God's love for me". -- Cheryl Swell, Seminole, OK

"I hope you know how deeply the words that were given to you and then to me, have touched me. The power, truth, and spirit were so strong! I can picture wolf in my mind, and smile." -- Clair Parker, Hartford

"I received your book today. The word I think of to describe it is POWERFUL! At this point in time you are the best source I've met for the deeper spiritual feelings and beliefs. . . . I feel comfortable" -- Nick Cleveland, Iowa

"The sharing messages in your book, re: your work and life-I found truth and inspiration there, and beauty-are sacred. I thank Spirit that we met!" -- Tina in Tuscon

About the Author

Susan Thomas Underwood is a Native American artist/author of the Loyal Shawnee tribe of Oklahoma. She was raised on and operates a ranch in Oklahoma where she is active in her tribe, is close to nature, and lives the traditional Indian ways.

She holds a BAE degree from Oklahoma State University and a MLS degree from Oklahoma University, and spent the 1st 17 years of her career teaching art in public schools and illustrating for wildlife/hunting magazines. She is well published in that field, and also in the Native American art circles. She is one of the featured artists in the Native Peoples Art Calendar for the year 2000 (the December artist). Rogers State University offers a video about the artist as produced from their FOCUS ON ART television program entitled, "The Art of Susan Thomas".

Known as the "Indian Philosopher" for the narratives that accompany her paintings, Susan began to write the words without the art in l997. Her words eventually became her 1st book, WALK WITH SPIRIT: A Native American Approach To Spirituality. Her 2nd book, SEEKS THE TRUTH is scheduled for release in early 2000.

Walk With Spirit March 12, 2009

I found this book to be very helpful when it comes to understanding something about Native American spirituality. However, I found way too many grammatical errors. If one can look past the blatant and obvious grammar mistakes, one can appreciate Underwood's expression of her spirituality. She calls herself an artist, and I would agree. She definitely has some good ideas and encourages a love for nature, which is sometimes forgotten by those who claim to be Christian. I like seeing the similarities and differences between Christian spirituality and Underwood's version of Native American spirituality. That's another thing about the book. Underwood gives a disclaimer at the beginning of her book. She is trying to help her readers understand that Native American spirituality is difficult to explain, and that there are varied forms of it all over America. The book is really a mix of various spiritual expressions, because she is not a full-blooded Native American. She is merely articulating what she has experienced.
I think this book would be helpful for those who want some insight about Native American spirituality. Just push past the grammatical errors. Hopefully the next edition will correct some (if not all) of them.

I was looking for a how to book about the Native American Spirituality. This book is about the author's personal look into spirituality through the eyes of the author. Although it was not what I was looking for, it is still a good one to read. The author talks about her coming to terms with her life through her native american spirituality.

I thought I would learn alot about Spirituality with this book and then I gave it to an elder to review, he told me that most of my learning will come with practice not reading. I am forever grateful to my teachers. However, this book did bring some good points to light for me. I would recommend that people at least have an open mind and read this because everything put in our path can be a learning experience. I only had one problem and that was went she stated that she became Native when one of her parents died. I didn't quit understand that. She's either Native or non-native.
