When they appeared in the early '80s, Asia seemed to be a holdover from the '70s, when supergroups and self-important progressive rockers reigned supreme. Featuring members of such seminal art rock bands as King Crimson (John Wetton), Emerson, Lake & Palmer (Carl Palmer), and Yes (Steve Howe), as well as Geoff Downes from the Buggles, Asia did feature stretches of indulgent ... Editorial Reviews

Limited three disc (two CDs + DVD) edition. 2010 live release from the reunited Prog/Pop quartet, recorded during their tour for the Phoenix album in 2009. This live set captures Asia performing to an enthusiastic crowd. The show's masters come from the band's own archives and this is a show they have personally selected to be filmed and released. It's a raw and honest view of the musicians as they play to a receptive audience. It is a "must have" for all Asia and Prog Rock fans. CD features one song not included on the DVD: 'Fanfare For The Common Man'. The DVD includes one song not included on the CD edition: 'The Court Of The Crimson King'. Frontiers

"Spirit of the Night" is the second live CD/DVD to be released by the reformed original line-up of "Asia", in support of their comeback album "Phoenix". "Spirit of the Night" was recorded in August 2009 during the Cambridge Rock Festival. This is a 2-disc DVD+CD pack with the DVD playing in both stereo and 5.1 surround sound.

Taking into account that it is a festival appearance one should expect a rather limited track-list with most song selections taken from "Asia"s first two albums, the ones recorded by the original line-up, plus a couple from the "Phoenix" album. Now "Spirit of the Night" captures "Asia" on a somewhat smaller stage/gig than you would expect from the multi-platinum outfit, which never-the-less makes for more efficient camera coverage and perfect sound quality. As always "Asia" are rather static on stage, focusing on delivering the best musical performance instead of show. Needless to say the quartet perform each and every song to the letter, remaining true to the studio versions while raising performance intensity; that's primarily due to the Carl Palmer's flamboyant and extra technical drumming and John Wetton's impeccable vocal performance, once again hitting all the notes he comes up with in the studio.

Overall "Spirit of the Night" is a first rate live offering by one of the leading prog/melodic rock bands of the genre effectively proving that "Asia" are just as competent a live act as ever. "Spirit of the Night" really allows one to enjoy everything that is great about this band.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent and Satisfying Live Recording July 4, 2012
Format:Audio CD
It seems that these days there is an abundance of live albums coming from older artists. Quite a few of these performances are often marred by the way time deteriorates certain skills and abilities. Fortunately, that is not the case with Spirit Of The Night. John Wetton continues to sing quite well, although it is easy to tell that some backing vocals are added. The musical performance is strong, and the sound is very good. Some exceptional performances include Fanfare For The Common Man, In My Own Time, Time Again, and Extraordinary Life. The performance throughout the CD is consistent and satisfying. Including Midnight Sun as a cd bonus track is definitely a nice treat. I'm typically wary about buying live albums these days; however, Spirit Of The Night is one purchase I am glad I made.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great, really great but... June 28, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
The cd:

Have a wonderful sound really superb, the set list is awsome including the alpha excelent song "My Own time" and "Midnight sun" like a bonus track.

The DVD:

Well, the stage is very small, look like a presentation for a very small group of fans, but it's ok is full of energy and good humor, like an extra material include a version of the legendary King Crimson's song "In the Court of the Crimson Kings" and this is the bad part of my review...

The Version include Ian McDonald on flute (an original member of King Crimson) and this may supposed it's a great performance... but... with sadness i must confess that the version is horrible, the voice of Mr. McDonald is totally out of tune on chorus (very far from his performances with 21st century schizoid band). He still have great skills with the flute, but in some ocassions look like without breath making a great effort for domain the instrument in wich once upon he was a master. With fortune, John Wetton is in great conditions like bass player and lead vocals yet

The presentation:

IT'S ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL, The cover of Phoniex on blue look terrific. It came in a three faces digipack, with an nice photo booklet of eleven pages
