5.0 out of 5 stars Well illustrated, January 30, 2011

Published to accompany the exhibition Spirit of the North: The Art of Eustace Paul Ziegler, 1998 & 1999 at the Anchorage Museum of Art and the Morris Museum of Art, Augusta, Georgia.

In the main essay Woodward attempts to answer the questions why Ziegler focused his painting on Alaska, and why he is know as an Alaskan painter today even though at the most he spent only fifteen years there while spending nearly three times as many years in Seattle. He also aims to answer the question of Zielger's place in the history of Alsakan art. In the other essay here Pennington provides a commentary on the paintings. The book includes a bibliography.

There are in excess of 100 colour plates shown here, many of them full page in size and include paintings in oils as well as watercolours, along with a few examples in other media. There are also a few period photographs. The quality of reproduction is very good. The paintings are captioned but rarely including the date.

This is an informative well illustrated book and it shows the versatility of this very prolific artist. I would have liked to see some detail views of a few paintings to get a clearer picture of his brush work or palette knife strokes, but other than the painting shown on dust-jacket there is none. Beautiful paintings nonetheless.
