An absolute classic from one of the greatest Aussie bands of all time. They don't come better than this and with Shane Howard's emotionally charged lyrics, it's a must in any cd collection.

A brilliant album. I never get sick of listening to it.

If you like this album, you'd also like 'Oceania', their second album, and all of Shane Howard's album's (the main singer from Goanna). All a similar style, unfortunately none available through Amazonn yet.

Back in 1982 I saw a video of this band on Mtv it was for the song "Solid Rock" I was floored at how well written and performed this cut was. I immediately went out and bought this album and listened and listened and listened, I wore out several copies over the years and several years ago I got a CD copy of this great album. I can't reccomend it highly enough!!! It is so well written and performed and is a wonderful blend of folk, rock with some country touches all wrapped in a delightful Australian music sensiblilty that yeilds perfection!!! Don't be afraid of this one just because you've never heard of this band. This is my all time favorite albumn, without a doubt!

I stopped by today to find a copy of their new release "Spirit Returns" only to come up empty handed hopefully Amazon will get it soon!!

Australians have a very high reputation among the international music industry. Goanna is one such band that has had a big impact on Australian listeners. Their hit song - Solid Rock, hit the charts in the early eighties with every radio station pumping out the melodious tune. All the tracks on the CD reflect upon life not just as it is but how it should be. Their music is about the great human longing. They sing about the spirit of place in Australia: They sing about the dangers of nuclear war, evils of poverty and unemployment. Most of all they make pleasing sounds, sounds that can calm even the most savage beast. Today, radio stations such as Trible M are still playing the old rock that once touched our nation, and I am pleased to say that Goanna was apart of that rock era in the eighties. Although this band is an oldie its still a goldie, if you don't have this album in your collection of music, your missin' out mate!

Still heard regularly on radio in Oz, this album deserves dusting off and a regular outing - if you haven't heard it then listen to it and buy it - if you enjoy Icehouse you'll proabably like this earlier Oz Band. Its still clean, fresh and original. Only wish I could replace my tape of the second Goanna album - 'Oceania' - which is just as good as 'Spirit of Place'. Hope to replace it through Amazon soon!!!

Goanna was an Australian band formed in 1977. Shane Howard led this band. I bought their "Spirit Of Place" #179, in 1982. The tune I fell in love with was "Solid Rock (Sacred Ground)", #31 mainstream rock. Other songs I like were, "Cheatin' Man", "Four Weeks Gone", and "Stand Yr' Ground". Their sound is very classy rock with kind of a laid back California feel. Shane has released several solo albums in the 2000's.

Goanna were probably the best of the Aussie Invasion that hit the US back in the early '80's. I bought an audio cassette of Spirit of Place in 1982 and it quickly became my favorite tape ever. There aren't any songs on this cd, tape, whatever. They are, instead, well-crafted, intense stories set to music. If you like the works of Harry Chapin, or Springsteen's "Nebraska," you might want to give Spirit of Place a moment of your time. You won't regret it!

This album is very evocative of the Outback and all the people of Australia. It brings back great memories of the people I've met on trips there and places I've seen.
