5.0 out of 5 stars Spiritual and uplifting August 17, 2005
Format:Audio CD
I hadn't listened for a long time to Randy Weston, until last Sunday when I saw him give a masterful solo performance in Antwerp. I was especially impressed by his rendering, if I understood correctly, of a child song mixed with gnawa influences. It worked beautifully and I thought that I should check out this CD where he actually performs with gnawa musicians.

This CD opens impressively with a wonderful trademark "earthy" solo on Receiving the Spirit. The music builds up slowly with flute, trombone and the then the gnawa chanting on the third track.

This is not an album to listen on shuffle play. Let the spirit draw you in. Beautiful.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Spirit of Randy Weston December 8, 2011
By Sunkari
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Randy Weston's lifetime of performing and research into the undeniable links between Traditional (Continental) African Music and African American Jazz is well documented in his new Autobiography "African Rhythms" The music on this CD is an awsome testiment to that fact.
