Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

One of a successful series of sports photographic books.

From the Inside Flap

The Spirit of Rugby is a photographic collection of all that makes rugby one of the most physically demanding and highly exiting sports.

The book portrays the boyish enthusiasm of youngsters as well as the old Trojans and outstanding heroes of today's game and those from times past.

Eight articles hint at the variety of challenges on and off the pitch in a highly poignant but amusing way.

From the world's great international grounds to the weekend fixture where 30 people will run themselves into the ground. The Spirit of Rugby will remind players, ex players and enthusiasts alike just why rugby is the greatest team sport of them all.

This is a wonderful book of rugby. It is more of a Photo easy that captures the spirit of the game for all ages. The Pictures include players of all ages and levels of play. This is an excellant gift, hard cover coffee table material. We have decided to give a copy to our Youth Rugby Coach and order another copy for ourselves.

The book includes photos from all over the world, including South Africa and New Zealand. It does not explain the game, that is not its purpose, but if you have every played the Game, this is a must buy.

4.0 out of 5 stars ... and even if you don't., October 27, 2003
This review is from: The Spirit of Rugby (The Spirit of Series) (Hardcover)
I haven't had a whole lot of exposure to rugby, don't understand all the rules, and sometimes have trouble following the action. I do know it's a great spectacle, though, and when I get a chance to watch it, I almost always enjoy it. But so much of the action happens very quickly, or inside a scrum of flailing arms and churning legs.

That's whaat makes this book such a revelation. Much of the photography is exceptionally high-quality, freezing the action at a moment that reveals all the skill, energy, and passion at work from schoolyard competition to the highest reaches of the World Cup. There are also great shots of players at rest before and after matches, fans with painted faces and raw emotions, and quite a lot more.

There's not a lot here about the history of the game, or really much of anything explaining it all to a newbie like me. But whether you're a serious fan who lives or dies with your team, or just someone like me who enjoys a good show, you could do far worse than spending some time poring over the great photos collected here.
