Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Veteran romancer Graham ( Lord of the Wolves , etc.) provides a warmhearted piece of fluff that will appeal to readers who appreciate familiarity more than substance in their holiday fare. Set during the Christmas season and reminiscent of 1950s women's-magazine formula fiction, the tale profiles dauntlessly cheerful widow Becky Wexham, who raises her three young children and her recently orphaned nephew Davey in a ramshackle Victorian home in Florida. Becky's marriage was blissful, and she has resolutely turned her back on romance, believing that no eligible man would take on the four children who are now her first priority. So she concentrates on a series of part-time jobs and on encouraging Davey to fulfill his dream of making the Little League team. When a special coach helps the grieving youngster gain confidence in his abilities, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to guess that Davey isn't the only character whose dreams will come true by the end of this predictably sweet tale, which remains in the memory no longer than a Christmas candy cane lasts on the tongue.

1.0 out of 5 stars Ghastly, January 18, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Spirit of the Season (Hardcover)
No matter how reasonably priced this book is, don't buy it; it is ghastly. I thought it might be fun to read a Christmas romance and so decided on this one. The writing was terrible, the story dull, and as a plot device the ghost of Babe Ruth is brought back to help a young boy make his little league team. Dreadful!

5.0 out of 5 stars Spirit of the Season, December 30, 2011
This review is from: Spirit of the Season (Hardcover)
Twenty yars later,I still find this to be one of the most charming romances ever. I've reread it nearly every Christmas and given copies to friends. The characters are funny and vulnerable dealing with the many exaspirating situations of everyday life. A real family lives here. GREAT CANDIDATE FOR A HALLMARK CHRISTMAS MOVIE.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dull and average!, March 15, 2010
This review is from: Spirit of the Season (Hardcover)
Good book, cute not really memorable. However maybe I have this opinion simply because I am not a HUGE baseball fan. There is a LOT of baseball talk and Babe Ruth in it, and I really don't care to go that in depth with baseball.

On the other hand, the storyline was good, just cute and you can guess what is going to happen so that bums me out a little when I read.

It didn't really even seem like Christmas, maybe because it took place in Florida I don't really know but I wouldn't classify it as a good book to get you in the mood for Christmas.
