Book Description

October 22, 2011
The library is a different world when the doors close for the night. Playful phantoms emerge to tease Fader, the street urchin who sleeps in the warm building. The atmosphere becomes more sinister when the green phantom appears. To stay strong, he steals the spirits of children who enter, or are locked in, the library at night. The bodies of his victims disappear. The spirit stealer's attack on Fader leaves the boy with half a spirit, trapping him in the library forever.

Half a century later Amelia joins Fader when she is locked in by mistake. Fader tries to protect her from the spirit stealer but he fails with disastrous consequences.

Time moves on and a century after the library opened Tyler tries to rescue those trapped by the spirit stealer. Will his attempt succeed?

The Library--Safe as Houses? December 11, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
With both boy and girl protagonists, Spirit Stealer, a middle grade fantasy novel, is appealing to readers of both genders. The setting of this book in a library makes it doubly intriguing. Libraries are safe places, right? But what if characters could come out of the books and menace the young library patrons? Ms. Perkins captures and holds the reader's attention in this tightly woven story.

The plot involves two different boys and their encounters with the spirit stealer who lives in the library. The first boy is a street urchin who needs a warm, dry place to sleep. And the other boy is the son of a librarian. It's interesting to see how the girl character spans the stories of both boys. You'll want to read the book to see if the stories merge and to find out if the evil green phantom is ever vanquished.

Fader, a street urchin of the 1890's finds a great place to keep warm on cold nights. He figures out how to get into the new library after hours and spends his time catching up on his reading. It's a great situation, which he hides from his fellow urchins, so as to not gather a crowd. However one night, he sees something. White mists that vaguely take the form of people and animals. He calls them the phantoms and relaxes when he discovers they cannot touch him.

Another type of phantom shows up; one that Fader dubs the spirit stealer. Unlike the white mists, this phantom is an evil green and very aggressive. Fader finds that the spirit is coming from the library basement, but it can only go so far into the library. Fader has to sneak into the stacks to get books to read, but finds a storage room to be a safe refuge.

When one of Fader's cohorts discovers his night-time hiding place, he makes himself at home, wandering through the shelves and even enjoying the white phantoms. But then the green phantom shows up. Fader watches in horror as his friend is first sucked dry of his spirit, then disintegrates. This is when Fader realizes the how dangerous the Spirit Stealer really is.

This is such an original idea and well-executed too. I found myself tensing up when the Spirit Stealer was coming after Fader and Amelia (another kid who gets locked into the library at night). There's a whole lot more I can't even mention because it'd be too much of a spoiler. I was delighted with this book and have become a member of the Sue Perkins Fan Club.
