Book Description

Darr has the ability to hear the disembodied voices of the spirits. Unfortunately, the spirits have nothing useful to say. A young, inexperienced Spirit Summoner, Darr often wonders at the purpose of such a useless ability. When an unnatural fire sweeps through his village, Darr sets out on a mission of self-discovery and curiosity.

As a Spirit Summoner, Darr learns he can enter the spirit realm. There he has access to the elemental magic contained within the Sephirs, legendary artifacts that once promised balance for a world turning towards chaos. Now, the Sephirs' powers are dwindling since their untimely disappearance, and Darr is at the center of the quest to find and recover them. Suddenly, Darr's curiosity is a whirlpool threatening to drown him, but his compulsion to see things through locks him into a journey attracted to disaster.

For the Sephirs do more than restrain the primal forces of magic. The Devoid, an evil long caged and hungry, has begun to loosen the bars of its prison. If the Sephirs fail, the Devoid will escape and feed on the Light of the living until nothing remains.

And the Devoid knows Darr's lack of confidence is the key needed to free itself completely.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

The Chosen of the Light is a three book epic fantasy series. I began writing this book in high school, and numerous revisions and rewrites have turned it into this series. Book One, Spirit Summoner, tells the story of Darr Reintol as he struggles with his new abilities, power that allows him control over the Four Elements and life itself.

Books Two and Three are forthcoming, but I'm working tirelessly on them. Book Two will follow Darr's continuing journey to secure the element-binding Sephirs while the rest of the world fight back against the Soul Seekers. Book Three will chronicle the final battle against both the Soul Seekers and the Devoid, and only the Chosen of the Light stand a chance against them.

The world of Ictar spreads out in all directions, a world rich in history and with a future that weaves through my mind. Many new stories await.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great fantasy ready January 3, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I bought this book on the suggestion of a friend, and I wasn't disappointed. The engaging plot and interesting characters helped me finish it in only two sittings. I think this is the author's first piece, and I am looking forward to what's next.

Matt Campbell's novel, Spirit Summoner, should please any fan of Fantasy/Sci-Fi literature. In a nutshell, the hero Darr can hear and speak to spirits who compel him to fulfill his destiny and start a quest that will keep you entertained and on the edge of your Kindle. Along the way he meets a slew of intersting characters - Nidec Waq, The Archon, and Racall - who help him in a journey I found very reminiscent of Baggin's voyage in The Hobbit.

Despite being a very imaginative and well written book, it was a little wordy - but that's usually the case for an author's first novel. Once you get past the inital set-up and introduction to the cast, and Darr's quest begins, the read grows both enthralling and addicting. The ending of Spirit Summoner will have you salivating for the arrival of the second book of the series. While this genre is not my favorite, it's still a great read. Five Stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Chosen of the Light Begins January 21, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Matt Campbell’s “Spirit Summoner (The Chosen of Light)”, is an excellent start to a wonderful fantasy epic. The story moves fluidly from at once creating a world with a unique history and current characters that move through it. I enjoyed reading it, and I was so glad this was only the first book in a series from the author.

Campbell tells the fantastic story of Darr Reintol, a village boy and young summoner with hidden abilities and strength even he isn’t aware of. Initially, he thinks of his abilities as an annoyance, hearing the spirits babble incoherently. But when Darr meets up with the prophet Nadiq Waq, the world the village boy thought he knew is revealed as vastly different and very precarious. He learns that he can enter a realm of spirits, and control elemental magic, the very magic that might be turning against the world as evil starts to weaken artifacts meant to maintain balance.

Campbell does an excellent job developing the story and the main characters and the world in which they exist. He spends just the right amount of time on world-building, without making it over-bearing or dumping information on the reader as some authors tend to. There is a lot to follow, but Campbell weaves together the story with the background to reveal a living and breathing.

In this first book “Spirit Summoner (The Chosen of Light)”, Campbell brings life to both the heroic and the mental struggle of Darr Reintol. He creates a world and characters that are entertaining and believable, and manages this first stage of the epic fantasy with the adeptness of an expert. The reader will get a real sense of a larger world existing beyond that of the story, one in which the fantastic can, and will, take place.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good high fantasy February 7, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
I love a good high fantasy with intricate world building, but the world in Spirit Summoner is beautiful in its simplicity. It's very well fleshed out but not overly detailed.
The characters have depth and raw emotions that you could feel coming off the page. The plot seems to pass fast with one thing and another without giving the readers time to think and process. There was no Big WOW factor but the plot line is interesting and captured my attention.
Darr Reintol is an intriguing character. As a Spirit Summoner, Darr had been born with an invisible connection to the Currents, allowing him to hear the voices of the spirits, and in turn, communicate with them.
No one knew who the Soul Keepers were, but everyone agreed they used magic lost since the Aeon Wars, and they ripped the souls from the bodies of those they killed.
Darr embarks on a journey, where he and his companions are forced to fight in the Currents and learn to listen to the voices there.
Matt Campbell's novel is a wonderful fantasy epic.
I look forward to learning more about it but I was very pleased with my first look. The characterization was outstanding and the story pulled me in right away. So, what more is there to say? I can hardly wait for the next book!

5.0 out of 5 stars A GREAT FANTASY November 9, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
A fire starting in the blacksmith's shop spreads to the general store owned by Darr Reintol's father. His father is injured and a customer is killed. Darr sets off on a journey through the forests of the Valimere Peninsula to find his brother Erec and sister Jinn, who are visiting the walled city of Stern.
Nidic Waq is a prophet. Instead of being revered he is an outcast. He is what is called a Spirit Summoner, someone who can communicate with the thousands of souls flowing freely within the Currents, a place that is distinct from the physical world.
With the help of Nidic, Darr discovers that he is also a Spirit Summoner. All the years of having spirit voices intruding on his thoughts is now explained.
On the way to Stern Darr gets lost and is rescued by another Spirit Summoner, Racall who becomes his friend and mentor.
The four Sephirs, earth, air, fire and water have to be returned to the Currents and that is the task Darr ultimately has to undertake.
As in all good stories there have to be some baddies. The Devoid are evil and they created the Soul Seekers. Soul Seekers murder people and rip out their souls. Their methods of killing their victims are gruesome, but not gratuitous in the confines of this story.
An assortment of interesting characters flesh out this tale. Conra the Elf, a friend of Darr's father is a staunch ally along with the Dwarf people
Only a Spirit Summoner can restore the Sephirs but The Devoid and their Soul Seekers are desperate to gain the power of the Sephirs for themselves.
When Darr meets up with his sister and brother, and with the help of Conra and their other friends they set off to find the Sephirs and return them to their rightful state. If they fail, civilization as they know it, is doomed.

More About the Author

Over the last twenty years, I've been putting my love for fantasy down on paper. I began writing at the age of 11, but I've been telling stories long before then. With interests in writing, woodworking, parenting, comic books, movies, and video games, I always have something new to write about and to inspire me.

My passion for wonder, and my love for the fantastic inspired me to write my debut novel, The Chosen of the Light. At a staggering 400,000 words, I was forced to split my novel up into three books, the first of which, Spirit Summoner, is available on eBook today.

I live in Western Washington with my wife, Jen, and son, Jacobi.
