A Perfect Album,

Surprised about two things: first, that no one has reviewed this amazing album yet, and second, that it is apparently out of print (the "on demand" CD burning service notwithstanding). Perhaps the latter has something to do with the former.
Anyway, Kevin Eubanks is a fantastic jazz guitar player who has assembled a powerhouse band to back him for these sessions. Dave Holland on bass is the biggest name in the band, as well as Kevin's brother Robin on Trombone, Kent Jordan on flute and Marvin "Smitty" Smith on drums. The compositions are at once flowing and tightly orchestrated, allowing plenty of space for the band to stretch out. The word that comes to mind is "organic." Each track seems to grow naturally. It is quite extraordinary. As someone who is a ruthless song deleter from their digital music library, this album is one of a select few who retain all their tracks because it is perfect as it stands. In the 18 years since I first heard Spirit Talk, I have heard a lot of other albums, but I have heard few I keep coming back to that keep delivering the goods. |
