Reels you in like a fish on a line!,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Chronicles of Ancient Darkness #2: Spirit Walker (Hardcover)
Once I started reading the first page, I couldn't put it down. Written with careful planning, it keeps your hand turning the pages until you reach the end. It has a very unsuspecting ending, and along the way your heart is always pounding as if you were really in the book. You feel like you ARE Torak, and you feel everything that he feels - his anger, happiness, frustration, despair...Ms. Paver has wonderful talent. I wish I could write like she does!

Although he is still reeling from the violent death of his father and the loss of his "soul" mate, Wolf, Torak has found a kind of peace living with the Raven Clan. As he tries to sort out his life, he has developed a growing fondness for its leader, Fin-Kedinn, and a kinship with the gentle people. In a single moment, however, all of this changes when he encounters a sick hunter from another clan.
The sick man had yanked handfuls of hair from his scalp and beard, leaving patches of raw, oozing flesh. His face was crusted with thick honey-colored scabs like birch canker. Slime bubbled in his throat as he spat out the last of the hair --- then sat back on his heels, and began scratching a rash of blisters on his forearm. With his heart filled with dread, Torak returns to warn the Clan of the fever that is spreading. To his horror he finds that the mad sickness has already made its claim. Where could this be coming from? Was it possible that it had something to do with the Soul-Eaters and the warnings his father had given him? With a jolting realization, Torak knows he must find the source of this sickness. Thus begins a most perilous journey --- a journey to find the cure and a journey that unfolds a past that Torak will find hard to accept. This story is told in two voices --- one from Torak and the other from his spirit brother, Wolf. Wolf refers to Torak and other humans as Tall Tailless. His voice offers views of all the confusion, which seems to result from human greed. Although Wolf does not understand the complexities of these things, he senses good and evil and the need to protect Torak. His ultimate goal is to be reunited with Torak and his journey parallels that of his spirit brother's. Torak builds friendships within the Seal Clan but also tragically discovers a darker secret in someone he trusted. His problems have become deeper and more complex in this story, especially as he begins to comprehend that he is a Spirit Walker. Renn, the Mage apprentice (much like a spirit advisor), is again his companion and once more proves herself to be a true friend and warrior. SPIRIT WALKER is every bit as good, if not better, than WOLF BROTHER. There is yet another book to look forward to and the possibility of a movie. Michelle Paver is in the winner's circle with this trilogy. --- Reviewed by Sally M. Tibbetts

I really enjoyed reading this book. The characters are vivid and you are on the edge of your seat until you find out what happens to them. A must read. The first book in this series is very good also.

My nephew is 10 and would typically choose anything else to do other than read. Being a teacher myself, I often give my neices and nephews books as part of their Christmas/birthday gifts. A student of my own recommended the first book in this series (Wolf Brother) to me, so I bought it for Colin. My sister had to practically force him to sit down and read, but once he got started he loved the book! That's when I bought him the second and third in the series - hoping to keep him going on it. When they arrived at his house, and he saw that they were in the series (and hard cover) he was thrilled! He's been showing off his collection of books to everyone, and has his nose inside reading to make his way through to the next in line! I'm looking forward to#4 and #5 coming out here so I can send those to him as well. I'm ecstatic that he's finally found a book he'll read form beginning to end, not to mention a series. It's good to have reading be a hobby in your life, and I'm so happy this series has shown Colin that reading can be enjoyable. I would recommend this book and the entire series to anyone interested in getting kids reading. It's an adventurous and exciting series!

Suspenseful and educational - for kids and adults alike!,

This is part two of the Chronicles of Ancient Darkness series. My kids and I listened to it in the Audio CD version read by Ian McKlellan, who does a fantastic job of it. We were literally glued to the CD player. This is not only a tale of suspense and magic, but it is also about respect for nature and all living creatures. THe reader learns about ancient native peoples' culture and beliefs while following an exciting adventure. My kids are only in 3rd grade, but they enjoyed it a lot, as did I - highly recommended for ages 9 and up. We cannot wait for Book 3 to come out!

When I first heard about the Chronicles of Ancient Darkness series it was through this book. I was drawn to it because a rave review from my favourite local bookstore, but also because the cover art looked so Pacific Northwest. It is, in fact, supposed to be set in a more nordic setting, but I couldn't help but think of ancient times in my own backyard San Juan islands. Hey, we have Orcas too, you know. Once again Torak, Renn and Wolf must vanquish a terrible evil that threatens the Forest, and this time their trek leads them to the Sea. Michelle Paver's dedication to first-hand research made the setting come alive for me, and I saw many elements of Haida and Inuit cultures sprinkled throughout the novel, but never too heavy-handed, which was refreshing. Although these book are a little predictable, I still enjoy being transported to a fresh-scented outdoor world filled with spirits, demons, and lots of adventure. I put this in the "Mist of Avalon" catagory, but I would liken it most to Clan of the Cavebears.

This book is the second book in the Chronicles of Ancient Darkness Books. It tells of the great sickness that spreads throughtout the forest to the clans. Torak journeys his way through the forest and across the sea, to find the cure. It tells of a mysterious ability that Torak has and it will keep you wanting to read more to find out what happens in the end. If you have read the first book Wolf Brother like it, then you will want to read this book!
