5.0 out of 5 stars The Depreciation Guild - Spirit Youth, May 21, 2010
This review is from: Spirit Youth (Audio CD)
Splinter bands exist because members of a group want to try out different sounds and styles that they don't think would mesh with their main group's aesthetic. The Depreciation Guild shares some members with fuzzpoppers the Pains of Being Pure at Heart, and while you can certainly hear the dreaminess shared between the bands, the Depreciation Guild leans far more into the world of shoegaze and outside that of twee pop. The guitars are more textural, the drums more ethereal, and the melodies less immediate, and all of these aspects work together to create a record that is relaxed but still extremely engaging. On their debut, the Depreciation Guild leaned a little too heavily on 8-bit sounds culled from Gameboy and NES soundcards, but while those elements are still present on Spirit Youth, they're employed with restraint, and the album is better for it. One of the most interesting aspects on Spirit Youth is the way in which the band refuses to overplay the hooks. "Trace" has one of the best ascending melodies I've heard in years, and where I expected the band to milk that chorus for minutes at a time, they employ it only once at a time with no repetition. At first I was incredibly frustrated by this, because it seemed like they were missing an opportunity to craft a truly genius anthem, but the more you listen to it, the more you appreciate that the restraint allows for that hook to have so much more impact every time you hear it. This is an album for fans of Slumberland Records, shoegaze, and honest emotion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Electronic shoegaze perfection, August 8, 2010
This review is from: Spirit Youth (MP3 Download)
In the tradition of electronic shoegazers like The Radio Dept., Depreciation Guild which showed immense promise on their debut, In Her Gentle Jaws, have finally realized their potential with Spirit Youth. From start to finish whether you're looking for hooky guitars, subtle synthesizers or dreamy vocals in your electro dream pop, this album is one of the best. I had big expectations for this record and they absolutely surpassed them in every respect. Well done.
