Book Description

September 1997
For African American boys and the people who teach and love them, a guide to books that will create pride and a desire to learn.

Spirited Minds is a unique resource containing lively, informative descriptions of more than one hundred outstanding works of literature. With selections for readers of all ages, these works of fiction, poetry, biography, autobiography, folktales, drama, and history celebrate the African American male experience from childhood to adulthood. The selections have been made with the input of scholars, teachers, librarians, and young readers themselves, and original scratchboard illustrations appear throughout.

Here are works by the great writers and heroes of African American life: Langston Hughes, Walter Mosley, Malcolm X, Richard Wright, James Baldwin, Ralph Ellison, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Frederick Douglass, Richard Wright, and many more -- annotated and made accessible to the audience that needs them. For parents, teachers, mentors, and others, this is the key to unlocking a rich cultural heritage for African American males and helping them become lifelong readers. It is an invaluable companion for learning and inspiration.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

This annotated bibliography describes 107 books that tell stories of being African American and male. Identified by type and age range of appeal, from picture books and reading for Grade 1 to adult reading, the selections include autobiographies, biographies, novels, short stories, history, drama, and poetry. Among them are classics such as James Baldwin's The Fire Next Time and Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man and contemporary children's books such as Irene Smalls's Jonathan and His Mommy. Frederick Douglass, W.E.B. Du Bois, Marcus Garvey, Malcolm X, and Martin Luther King Jr. appear as authors or subjects or both. Compiled under the auspices of the Minnesota-based Givens Foundation for African American Literature to further its mission to celebrate and promote African American literature and history, the book aims to stimulate reading among black males and to expand public awareness of African American writers. Highly recommended for all public libraries and collections on black literature.?Thomas J. Davis, Arizona State Univ., Tempe

Review

An outstanding new reading resource for parents, grandparents, teachers and mentors who want to find and give books especially for African-American males. Beginning with books for very young children, it progresses to books for high school and adult readers and contains lively, informative descriptions of more than 100 outstanding works of literature by such authors as Langston Hughes, Walter Mosley, Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X, Frederick Douglass and James Baldwin. -- Dear Abby, November 21, 1997

Literary List for Young Males. 'If you're going to be somebody...you have to read about black people who have become somebody,' writes photographer Gordon Parks in the introduction to Spirited Minds. The author of 18 books, Parks' A Choice of Weapons and The Learning Tree are included in this handy guide for parents, teachers, and resourceful young males who want to find a good book. Biographies and autobiographies of many noted "somebodies" are included: Langston Hughes, Malcolm X, Frederick Douglass and Arthur Ashe are among them. More than 100 books of poetry, drama, fiction and history-divided into categories by ages-round out the offerings in Spirited Minds. The range here is wide: A Hero Ain't Nothin' But a Sandwich, The Sweet Flypaper of Life, The Piano Lesson, Black Diamond: The Story of the Negro Baseball Leagues, Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man. Recent books, such as this year's Gone Fishin' by Walter Mosley and works by women, such as Toni Morrison, Maya Angelou and Margaret Walker, are also included. There are no rare finds here, but having the titles [and the one-page synopses] of great books listed in one place is the first step to passing on these literary gems to the next generation. -- Emerge, September 1997

These are two ["Spirited Minds" and "Strong Souls Singing"] beautifully illustrated works that describe over one hundred carefully selected books, all of which were chosen for their quality as literature and for the stories they tell about the lives of African American men and women. These two books give an overview of literature that builds strong minds and souls among African Americans of all ages. -- Washington Informer, 24 December 1998 --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love this book!, June 1, 1998
By A Customer
I bought Spirited Minds for a friend who was desperate to steer her twelve-year-old son from video games to reading. Not only did we find great books for him, but the book descriptions prompted us to revisit some classics for older readers. Now my friend, her daughter, and I are eagerly waiting for the young women's edition to come out this summer.

What a great book to get kids excited about summertime (or any time) reading.
