Book Description

Haunted houses. Haunted hearts.
And a past that refuses to die.

Leap Books summoned best-selling paranormal and dreadfully talented debut authors to conjure up Spirited, a haunting collection of 13 tales guaranteed to keep you up all night.

Get entombed in stories of Egyptian treasures, shudder at tales of malevolent spirits, and become enthralled with the adventures of witch-hunters, ghost seekers, and lost souls. From steampunk to cyberpunk, our collection spans past, present, and future hauntings. One story actually leaps off the page with 3-D augmented reality.

With this celebration of things that go bump in the night, Spirited authors hope to slay the specter of illiteracy that plague our youth. All proceeds from Spirited will be donated to 826 National, a non-profit organization that offers free after-school tutoring, workshops, and in-school programs because "strong writing skills are fundamental to future success."

Go ahead. Turn the page if you dare. We won’t tell if you sleep with the light on. Because after all, there’s no rest for the wicked.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Anthology January 16, 2012
By RC
Format:Kindle Edition
What an impressive collection of stories! I bought it because I'm a fan of several of these authors, figuring the other stories would be filler. All I can say is WOW! I'm not sure I can even choose a favorite. It's a nice eclectic group of fun-to-read ghost stories. Some are scarier than others, but all of them were enjoyable reads. I now have some new authors on my radar that I can't wait to read more from.

The book started off with a great steampunk story about a female ghosthunter / necromancer. I read that in the "Look Inside" and was hooked. I hope the author writes more about Amelia Strangeways; she's my kind of gal. SPIRITED ended with romantic fable set in the afterworld. With its beautiful setting and lyrical prose, "The Story of Late" brought the book to the perfect close. In between there were stories set during the Crusades, in Salem during the witch hunts, and in a haunted castle. Contemporary stories of lost love, making friends, and attending proms (all with ghosts, of course) filled the middle of the book--along with a trip to Norway and a scary Viking dude. The end of the book had some cool futuristic stories. A spaceship and a gamer's world (with some amazing augmented reality--3D pics that pop off the page) rounded out the selections.

A collection well-worth picking up especially as all proceeds go to benefit literacy.

This anthology is definitely a double dose of delicious. Some of the top authors around, Candy Havens (One of my fav's) and the money goes to a worthy cause. This is a delightful treat for short story lovers and this is the perfect time of the year. A must read.

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW!! April 28, 2012

I wasn't expecting to enjoy all the stories in this collection, but I did. Originally I bought it because I love Maria V. Snyder's books. I started with her Study books, The Study Series Bundle and moved on to her Glass series Storm Glass (Glass, Book 1). So when I saw this anthology, I bought it so I could read her short story, "New Girl". I'm also a fan of Judith Graves Skinned books, Under My Skin (Skinned) and Second Skin (Skinned, Book 2), so I wanted to read her steampunk story in this anthology.

I thought I'd just skim the other stories, but I was totally sucked in from the first page. Each of the stories was different, but they were all well written. I can't even choose a favorite. "New Girl" was a fun read with an unexpected twist and "Strangeways vs. the Wraith" was so well-plotted and intriguing that I zipped right through and wanted to read more. Amelia Strangeways just jumped right off the page. I hope she'll be in other stories, she's such a great character.

Spirited was divided into Past, Present, and Future. Each section was enjoyable in a different way, but they were all so good, it was hard to pick a favorite. In the Past, I especially liked the haunted castle story by Dawn Dalton. It had some steampunk touches that fit well with the Strangeways story. A must-read in the Present section is the "The Cold One" by Candace Havens with it's scary Viking dude.

I'm not much of a sci-fi fan, but I totally loved the futuristic stories too. Shannon Delany's story with it's augmented reality was fascinating. I'd never seen anything like that before, so I played around with those icons quite a bit. They made 3-D images pop up on the page. Then I discovered she wrote the 13 to Life series. Now I have another author to add to my TBR pile.

So in addition to lots of great reads, this book introduced me to a bunch of new authors. For example, Jill Williamson's story set during the Crusades with an exotic Egyptian and a mysterious puzzle box made me search out her books. I've already read Replication: The Jason Experiment and look forward to trying her others. And I'd read Linda Joy Singleton's Last Dance (The Seer Series), but am now reading her Dead Girl Dancing. Can't wait to check out more of these authors.

And I've already read the anthology from cover to cover twice--it was that good!
