Not to be missed are the three country & bluegrass-influenced tracks What You Resist Persists, Broken Dream & It s Cold Outside Of Your Heart.

Biography

Justin Hayward (b. Swindon, October 14, 1946; full name David Justin Hayward) got his first guitar at age nine. In 1965, he joined pre-Beatles English rocker Marty Wilde as a member of his backing band, the Wilde Cats. By the end of 1965, Hayward had four songs that he felt ready to record on his own, which led him to former skiffle king-turned-producer Lonnie Donegan. It was Donegan's ... I'm a big fan of the Moody Blues, I just love his voice, beautiful and mellow songs, till the end than it changes to techno.

Although touring frequently with the revitalized Moody Blues Justin Hayward seems a rare guest in the studio. This being his first solo album since 1996. And not a whole lot of M.B. records either in this time.

What we get here is classic Hayward, well-written songs, heatfelt and clever lyrics mostly about romantic love. And mostly with his peculiar branch of touching melancholy. His dreamy guitar all over the place, supported by Anne Dudley's string arrangements. Most songs slow to mid tempo perhaps the album could seem a bit boring at first listen. But this is real Songs that slowly but surely grab the ears and work their way into the 'subconscious', keep rotating on the inner jukebox.

We do not hear that much of the psychedelic pioneer, but there is an udeniable undercurrent of unobtrusive sprituality on this beautiful low-key album. Not a big come-back or a radical new direction - except for some country influence in 3 of the songs amongst them a reworking of "Broken Dreams" - it is more like a thoughtful letter from a long-time, treasured friend.

This album sounds exactly like what it is -- the product of five decades of brilliant songwriting. There's so much wonderful music here I can`t decide on a favorite track. Every melodic nuance, every ingenious chord modulation, every lyric, arrangement, and vocal inflection is so meticulously conceived and performed it's like looking through a window into the soul of a great artist.

Way back in the earliest days of the Moody Blues, Justin Hayward called his music "a diary of my life". That description still applies, and as always, his chronicles somehow reflect our lives too. He charms us into his musical visions with that captivating voice and an artistic sensibility that's impossible to pigeonhole. Hayward is his own genre, flowing in and around all the musical impressions that fill his life. The rearranged Broken Dreams sounds just as haunting and plaintive with bluegrass musicians as without, simply because it's a brilliantly haunting and plaintive song. It's Cold Outside of Your Heart always had a country feel, and on this album, it came home to Nashville.

The last two tracks on the album, the explosive, techno, dance crazed tunes called Out there Somewhere, aren't so much Hayward, as an homage to Hayward, composed by other, younger generation musicians who were inspired by Justin's Moody Blues masterpiece, I Know You're Out There Somewhere.

All this rearranging and genre flexing is a lovely bonus. The nine new songs are the core of the album and one song in particular, Lazy Afternoon, should have come with a warning label. If you've ever found true love and lost it, this song will wring you dry. Lazy Afternoon has to be one of the most beautiful sad songs ever written. The rest of the tracks are just as satisfying in their own distinctive ways.

This was purchased for my wife, a long-time, die-hard Moody Blues fan. Here is her review: I Love this CD! . I play Spirit of the Western Sky quite often and I must say that this is probably Hayward’s best solo album. Stand-out tracks are “One Day, Someday,” “On the Road to Love,” "In Your Blue Eyes" and “The Eastern Sun,” my favorite song on the album. I also enjoy The Moody Bluegrass version of “It’s Cold Outside of Your Heart” and the dance remix of “I Know You’re Out There Somewhere” titled, “Out There Somewhere.” There really is no dud on this CD, you can listen to it from start to finish. I am surprised to read complaints about the 25 second track “Rising” – you can’t just go straight into a dance track without some type of segue. If you are a Moody Blues or Justin Hayward fan, give this CD a few listens and it will quickly become one of your new favorites.

Mr. Hayward has never lost contact with his muses. Unlike many other icons that I revere, his creative, lyrical and musical powers have not diminished with time; his voice is still silky and strong. Justin's predilection for "nature scape" imagery in his lyrics, and the haunting melodies are never boring. These lifelong talents are evident in this album. I had the privilege of attending his performance at the Music Hall, NYC. This soft-spoken, distinguished English gentleman and consummate performer never disappoints. JH and MB have had such an impact on me, I named my 27 year-old son " Justin" (This was before learning decades later that JH's first name is actually "David".) One of my brothers called me after enjoying several glasses of wine and having listened to Track 3; he said this experience made him cry. When the opportunity presented itself to me at home, I opened a bottle of wine, played the album - the emotional impact: goose bumps and tears. There are icons, and there are icons...

There are several tracks on this album which echo the best from the tenth Moody Blues album (The Present) as well as the Justin Hayward solo album "The View from the Hill." Especially appealing are: The Western Sky, In the Beginning, On the Road to Love and In your Blue Eyes. The remixes of It's Cold Outside of Your Heart and Broken Dream are very good, but the two Out There Somewhere mixes seem a bit out of place with the rest of this album (they are somewhat techno-pop). In all, a solid performance that should fit in the collection of anyone who enjoys Justin Hayward's music from the later Moody Blues days to present. l
