I am an avid reader and have taken in hordes of books, many from the world's wisdom traditions. This book has been in my library for the last three years and has been more helpful than any other single book I can think of. The SBOGF is remarkable on several different levels. Most of the non-fiction books I have read could have been reduced to the size of a pamphlet. They are light on content with loads of reiteration and superfluity. This book is the opposite of that. It's hard to imagine packing more wisdom into such a small space. I also appreciate the author's ability to render abstruse concepts into readily comprehendable ideas without resorting to specialist lingo or flashy head-splitting vocabulary words. At first, I read this intellectually and congratulated myself whenever my ideas synched up with the author's. What a deep guy I thought (referring of course, to both of us). Then later, after a major life crisis (including a diagnosis of Bipolar) I watched as my responses to life became increasingly devolved and dysfunctional. After a brief fling with meds I decided trading dysfunctionalism for Zombiehood was not my best option. So i floundered on for awhile until I stumbled upon the SBOGF again. But this time with a new approach. I actually did the exercises the author recommends instead of treating it like philosophy. Wow. What a difference. While many of the same underlying difficulties are still present, my responses have become so different it's getting harder and harder to identify as bipolar. As a matter of fact, it's getting harder and harder to identify with most of the old ways I thought about my'self'.

In summation, if I was asked what I thought the single most useful thing humanity could learn, I would simply hand them a copy of this book.

Reading the Spiritual Basis of Good Fortune was like hearing my own true voice uncovered and amplified. It gave me permission to indulge the ever-present sensibility that I am an immortal being living only in a present moment. I confess I'm not an avid reader of spiritual books, so I don't have much to compare it to in the genre. However, I can't imagine any book speaking so compellingly to the big questions. The voice comes right out of Art of War, ancient and certain - revealing the truth by merely drawing back the curtain of illusion. Each chapter is concluded with exercises designed to embed the understanding into the reader's spiritual awareness. I found these simple exercises had profound and subtle pay-offs: spontaneous joy, rampant imagination, unbridled hope. I started the book over again the day after I finished it. I'm reading it a second time, not just for myself, but so I can explain these transformative principles to others. That failing, I've ordered 20 more copies.
