A great resource, October 24, 2010
This review is from: Spiritual Classics (Hardcover)
It's hard to believe that I'm the first reviewer. I love this book - it's like having a learned friend to discuss religious literature with. Each of the fifty-two "spiritual classics" covered is reviewed in about 2-4 pages plus a "speed read" synopsis. The style is accessible without being shallow, and the author comes off as earnest and humble. I sometimes sit down and read a few at a time, sometimes use it as a reference on a specific work.
While it's certainly possible to quibble with the choices of classics, I don't think it's meant as a comprehensive survey but rather a broad sampling of Christian writings from a variety of denominations, plus a few other types of writing to stretch the mind a bit. Classics are split into sections of Early Christian Classics, Later Christian Writings, Approaches to Prayer (all Christian), Meditations & Praise of Solitude (all Christian), Lives of Inspiration (all Christian), Secular Texts (poetry, literature, psychology), Alternative Approaches (non-Christian religions).
