Spiritual Discipleship Challenged,
By
This review is from: Spiritual Discipleship: Principles of Following Christ for Every Believer (Commitment To Spiritual Growth) (Paperback)
I have read numerous books on discipleship and spiritual discipleship. J.Oswald Sanders brings a fresh perspective to the meaning of discipleship. He challenges the conventional definitions and demands of discipleship and places them alongside the precepts and principles lived and taught by Jesus Christ in the Scriptures.
I have seen a change in the lives of the students who have been studying this book. Because of this book, many of the lives at the Tabernacle Baptist Church have been transformed. Also discipleship has taken on a deeper meaning and facilitated a deeper commitment to and from our congregation.

This book is amazing! I've taken 5 men through it and many more from our church are taking it on! The best part of it is that it isn't merely Sanders' philosophical position loosely backed with Scripture...instead it's rich in Scripture which Sander's uses to reveal how the Church has softened what it means to truly follow Christ. In one chapter, he reveals how in the early Church the word "Christian" equalled "disciple". Yet today, we've diminished the word "Christian" to merely mean "believer" while a "disciple" is now only meant to reference someone "really serious about their faith."
I must respectfully disagree with the review presented by W.R Murphy on July 15, 2010 when he writes, "his (Sanders')position on discipleship in relation to salvation makes disciplship optional for the professing Christian." Not only does Sanders NOT detach discipleship from salvation nor make discipleship optional...he makes it very clear that the marks of true discipleship are the only marks of truly belonging to Christ. Mr. Murphy's quote from Bonhoeffer is meant to draw a distinction with Sanders yet they are actually in harmony...in fact Sanders quotes Bonhoeffer himself frequently in many of his books. A must read for anyone...especially if you want to get back to the biblical standards of discipleship laid out by Jesus and the Bible!!!

This is a wonderful book that I would happily lead men (and women) through to further their spiritual develeopment. Also look for Spiritual Leadership and Spiritual Maturity as a most excellent series.

I respect the writing of O. Chambers; however his position on discipleship in relation to salvation makes disciplship optional for the professing Christian. I stand with Bonhoeffer that " Christianity without discipleship is Christianity without Christ." The call of Jesus is a call to Himself (the person and place of salvation). May the Church return to the call of Jesus and His invitation ~ "to follow me" ~ "deny yourself" ~"take up your cross" and forsake the Consumer Christianity that is leading many down the broad road that Jesus warned us about.
