Book Description

February 12, 2002
In Spiritual Genius, journalist Winifred Gallagher, the acclaimed author of Working on God, asks Rabbi Lawrence Kushner to define holiness. "Standing in the presence of God," he says. "Everyone has it, but some people seem to have more of a knack for accessing it." Like holiness, the gift that Gallagher calls "spiritual genius"--which she defines as "the uniquely human ability to search for and find life’s meaning, then express it in our lives as only each of us can"--is one we all possess but don’t necessarily recognize.

Whether they are called saints, gurus, tzaddiks, or shamans, there have always been people who possess exceptional insight, altruism, and charisma. In this disarmingly inspirational book, Gallagher investigates what ordinary people trying to live decent, meaningful lives can learn from such extraordinary men and women, who are specially attuned to the deepest truths, and who exemplify-and radiate-spiritual genius.

In a clear-eyed, ecumenical approach that's free of dogma and bias and suffused with profound respect, Winifred Gallagher highlights the common wisdom-and down-to-earth good humor-of these religious leaders, revels in their differences, and identifies the capacity for spiritual genius that all of us share with them. On an island in the Arabian Sea, Gallagher visits Mata Amritanandamayi, regarded by devotees as a Hindu goddess, who transmits divine love through hugs and charities. She travels through America's inner cities with Tony Campolo, an Evangelical preacher who counsels national leaders and serves the poor. She learns how Riffat Hassan, a Pakistani theologian, uses the Qur’an to defend the rights of her Muslim sisters. She journeys to a Tibetan Buddhist monastery in the Himalayas to understand how an exiled minority has enchanted the world with their deep, resilient spirituality. In these diverse lives, Gallagher argues, we can glimpse our own potential for spiritual genius writ large. Each story testifies to the profound good in the world, even during a troubled time, and to Gallagher’s groundbreaking theory of a human capacity for finding life’s meaning that is nothing less than genius.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Journalist Winifred Gallagher leads us on a worldwide tour as she profiles 11 men and women, each of whom she calls a "spiritual genius." We all know them--those fellow humans who act as guiding compasses, always pointing "us toward a reality larger than the ego and the status quo," explains Gallagher. Some of these geniuses are also celebrities: Deepak Chopra, the Dalai Llama, Eckhart Tolle. Fortunately, Gallagher chose to profile lesser-known spiritual heroes, those who are changing lives while barely making a profit. Her geniuses include Dr. Riffat Hassan, a Muslim scholar who crusades against the abuse of women in the name of Islam, and Tenzin Palmo, a Tibetan Buddhist and former hermit who now runs a nunnery in the Himalayan foothills. Other subjects include kabbalah teacher Rabbi Lawrence Kushner and religious scholar Huston Smith. Gallagher (Working on God) is a skilled journalist, and her profiles are filled with vivid scenes in which she follows these people during their daily business. When Gallagher interviews a Christian social reformer and spiritual adviser to former president Bill Clinton, she writes, "Driving around the slums of Camden and Philadelphia with the Reverend Dr. Tony Campolo is like traveling with a hybrid of Mr. Toad and St. Francis Assisi. ... He delights in antics like paying the bridge toll for a stranger in the car behind his." In all of the profiles, Gallagher offers justification for considering these people the spiritual geniuses of our day. Of Huston Smith she writes: "His genius has illuminated the common ground on which people of all faiths can stand and face their common enemy: the daily grind of soulless materialism." Ultimately, Gallagher hopes these spiritual geniuses will light the fire in our bellies. "They compassionately teach us by words or example how to find and develop our own special roles in the great scheme of things. And they inspire us by demonstrating the ultimate expression of human potential." --Gail Hudson

From Publishers Weekly

HThis is an astonishing, engrossing introduction to 10 human beings who seem to live with one foot in another plane. Gallagher, journalist and author of several books (Working on God; Just the Way You Are), defines spiritual genius as the "ability to seek life's meaning" and proposes that "all of us use spiritual genius some of the time, but some of us use it all of the time." From a goddess on an obscure Indian island to passionate scholars (Huston Smith), community activists (Tony Campolo), hermits and healing doctors, the individuals she highlights are deeply religious men and women with a gift for "combining mysticism and activism." These living saints are not household names, but they clearly belong in the same class as more famous individuals such as Mother Teresa. Each has emerged from major religious traditions (Hinduism, Islam, Judaism and Christianity), but this book is not a primer on world religions. Each chapter plunges the reader into deep, rich veins of religious thought and experience. The disciplined devotion and seemingly boundless compassion of these geniuses, combined with their indifference to limelight, make them utterly convincing and magnetic witnesses to the divine. Gallagher manages to insert enough of herself to draw out humor, irony and humility and to let the reader taste what an encounter with these geniuses might be like without inserting any kind of obscuring religious bias. Her reverence, curiosity and appreciation of these individuals flow from the pages. (Feb. 19)Forecast: This outstanding multibiography is poised to do well in a time when Americans are focusing less on celebrities and more on "everyday heroes." A four-city author tour and advertising in such periodicals as New Age Journal, Tricycle and Parabola should help with promotion efforts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spiritual Genius is Genius, March 19, 2002

This review is from: Spiritual Genius: The Mastery of Life's Meaning (Hardcover)
"Spiritual Genius" is Winifred Gallagher's insightful look at 10 people that are truly touched, or should I say in touch, with the highest, holiest power. Just by reading about these figures one feels more spiritually alert themselves. A great bonus was that I ended up learning a hearty amount of history and of the beliefs that make up today's most popular faiths, merely one of many benefits from Gallagher's interpretation of each "spiritual geniuses" path. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in spirituality, becoming a better person or wants to read a book about modern day religious figures that is also page turner.

Ms. Gallagher's new book captures the present lives, histories and specialness of people she regards as spiritual geniuses. These are men and women, who, in very different ways, have found the meaning of life and have dedicated themselves to service of others. The brillance of these biographies is such that as you read you are conducting the interviews and receiving the wisdom - radiant beauty- these people all manifest. With superb attention to detail, you make several journeys around the world with Ms. Gallagher, and bring away with you a treasure of hope - that there are truly good people in this world. And every time Ms. Gallegher receives a blessing, the blessing is for you as well. Each "character" is truly unique and infinitely worth knowing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Book & Awesome Price!!!, November 13, 2005
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I originally purchased this book because it sounded like it might be interesting, and the price was just too low to pass it up. After having read it, I am amazed that it's considered a "bargain book", as it has so much to offer, and is quite beautifully written - not what I would expect from the "bargain" section...

To prepare for the writing of this book, the author traveled all over the world to meet & speak with vaious people who she considered to be "spiritual geniuses". Each chapter is dedicated to a specific person, and outlines the meetings they had, what that person has done/is doing, what their beliefs are, and how their beliefs have changed over the years.

Although each of these people hold different religious/spiritual backgrounds, there are several things they all have in common. First, they don't let their beliefs stop them from helping people who hold very different beliefs - they are willing to help EVERYONE. Second, they are all open to considering new thoughts & ideas. And last, they all tend to look for the best in other's - instead of looking for what's wrong, they look for what is right in everyone they meet.

Overall, I found this to be a very insightful, enjoyable book, and I highly recommend it.
