About the Author
C. Pierce Salguero is a nationally accredited teacher of traditional Thai massage and herbal medicine, and a member of the Shivagokomarpaj Institute (Thailand's most prestigious massage school), the Association of Northern Thai Medicine, the American Herbalists Guild, and the Associated Bodywork and Massage Professionals. His institution, the Tao Mountain School of Traditional Thai Massage and Herbal Medicine, is accredited by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork. Articles he has written on the subject of traditional Thai medicine have appeared in magazines and newspapers nationally and internationally, and his web site (www.taomountain.org) is one of the most popular sites on the internet for Thai massage information and resources. Pierce has degrees in Anthropology and East Asian Studies from the University of Virginia. From 1997 to 2001, he studied Thai massage and traditional herbalism under Lek Chaiya, Baan Nit, the Shivagakomarpaj Traditional Medicine Hospital, and other renowned schools in Chiang Mai, Thailand. He taught courses on traditional massage and herbal medicine at the Shivagakomarpaj Institute in Chiang Mai, and from his home in a near-by village. In September of 2001, Pierce moved to the Charlottesville, Virginia. He founded the Tao Mountain School, which offers Basic, Advanced, and Teacher Training courses in the Shivago Lineage of Thai Massage. He also teaches Thai massage at the Virginia School of Massage in Charlottesville, VA, the Baltimore School of Massage, and at the BSM's satellite campus in York, PA. Pierce is also currently working on a Ph.D. in the History of Asian Medicine at the Johns Hopkins medical school.

Dr. C. Pierce Salguero is a college professor and researcher of Asian medical traditions. He has a Ph.D. in the History of Medicine from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and has authored five books on multiple aspects of Traditional Thai Medicine. Dr. Salguero's books have been translated into Chinese, Portuguese, Czech, Estonian, and Spanish, and have been published in English-Thai editions in Thailand. The first edition of The Encyclopedia of Thai Massage has been the number one best-selling book on Thai massage on Amazon.com since shortly after its publication in 2004. Dr. Salguero teaches advanced courses on Thai massage and Traditional Thai Medicine at the Thai Institute of Healing Arts (www.thai-intitute.com).

This book is enjoyable visually but appears superficial in respect to depth of knowledge that is conveyed within it. I think this book will be interesting to someone who has no knowledge of the subject matter but will not be helpful to anyone who sincerely wants to learn about the spiritually of Thailand. Although the book is well produced, it is akin in substance to a magazine. To the best of my knowledge, genuinely helpful books on this subject matter have yet to be written.

I am an instructor of Thai massage, and am about to write a reveiw for all of Mr. Salguero's books. The reason I am doing this is because they give a great foundation for anyone practicing Thai massage or teaching it. This is the lens that I read these books through, and I have to say that while there is still plenty of room for more in-depth books to be written on the subject of this particular book in the english language, the truth is that those books don't exist. We can only compare to what is, not to what we may wish for. I am deeply thankful that Mr. Salguero has taken the time to share windows of his extensive knowledge with us.

This book is a wonderful overview of an important branch of traditional Thai medicine. It is well written and gives the reader a true picture of the vast and complex world of spirituality in Thailand and its importance to healing in this culture. I highly recommend it along with its companion books by the same author.
