Good, but why not buy a collection?, April 14, 2010
This review is from: Spiritual Laws (Paperback)
Though not Ralph Waldo Emerson's best or most important essay, "Spiritual Laws" details and refines some of his most important concepts. They are put forth more vividly elsewhere, but fans and scholars will appreciate this delineation. It deals specifically with Emerson's belief that the same spiritual laws inhabit all people, underscoring his emphasis on self-reliance and human divinity. He teaches us to rely on our own minds rather than being intimidated by ostensibly higher ones because all are in a sense part of a universal intellect. One should certainly read the better-known essays first, and the fact that this is widely anthologized - in Essays: First Series among other collections - makes it very hard to justify a standalone.
