About the Artist
Founded in 1996 by the former co-owner of the influential music store Dancetracks, Joaquin Joe Claussell, Spiritual Life Music has been on a mission to affect the music scene in a funky positive way by providing the consumer with music that is distinct in its soulfulness, quality and sensuality. The inspiration, stemming from the musicality & warmth of the bygone analogue era, is nourished by the breadth of possibility of the digital present. As a result of this approach, the label has been able to attract a diverse and adventurous group of artists with whom we have fostered a truly respectful and collaborative relationship, along with a progressive likeminded staff who bring the full weight of their individual personalities together. The fruit of all of this is a unique identity that Spiritual Life Music has begun to attain. This identity will mature and increase in strength and vitality with each release, Spirits willing. With Vol. 1 came our conception, Vol. 2 our birth and with this we begin to crawl, bit by bit.
SLAM MODE - Space travel is hazardous business; the amount of preparation involved can only be handled by a few. Above & beyond is the uncertainty of a favorable departure and return, further compounded by the after effects of exposure to zero gravity. Contrary to this method is the ancient way thru music, which has been handed down thru the ages via the oral tradition. SLAM MODE are mystical futuristic interpreters of this tradition, the musical way to space and back: cosmic cosmonauts
Ola Jagun & The Ancestral Rhythms Yoruba Spiritualist, Batik artist and percussionist, Ola Jagun is a true force of one. Nigerian born, Ola Jagun is a former member of the Nigerian Army band, Twin Seven Seven and he was both a conga and trap set drummer in Fela Anikulapo Kutis Egypt from 1980 til 1991. Along with his group Ancestral Rhythms, SLM released the critically acclaimed single Odo Oya, a tribute to Oya, the Yoruba/Nupe goddess of the wind.
3 Generations Walking Conceptually modern and progressive, 3GW represent a new sort of musical collaboration, the one between dj (MKL) & musician (Soy Sos). The 3GW sound encompasses feelings of reggae, jazz, & house with a dubwyze sensibility. This sound is further intensified by the lyrical prowess of the 3GW vocalists. Songs that search for truth and encourage introspection while forcing body movement are commonplace in their music.
Daniel Moreno Percussionist extraordinaire, Daniel is a Chicano from Northern California who made his debut as a percussionist in the band of the great organist/pianist Dr. Lonnie Smith. From there he traveled the world living in Brazil, France, Germany and Gambia before settling in NYC. Here in NYC he has made a name for himself as a 1st call percussionist and as host of the famed weekly jam sessions at 56 Walker Street in Tribeca. He is soon to release his full-length debut on SLM, which is co-produced by the legendary Cheick Tidiane Seck from Mali. The CD will feature music inspired by his many travels and former neighborhoods. Stay Close.
Mental Remedy - Mental Remedy is more of a producer driven project than a band, a medium for Joe Claussells spontaneous/impulsive musical expression. Releases have been varied in style and texture stemming primarily from Afro-Caribbean foundations. With Obatala, the philosophy behind Mental Remedy is further revealed in the untraditional and imaginative approach to this ancient song about the Yoruba god of creativity.
