Worth Reading and Rereading,
By Catholic Pilgrim "Mom" (Pierre SD USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Spiritual Masters: The Living a Life of Prayer in the Catholic Tradition (Paperback)
I stumbled across this book shortly after it was published, and read it in a weekend. I found the approachable style appealing as well as the wonderful suggestions regarding what the individual seeking to deepen his or her spiritual life could learn from the "spiritual masters". However, I find myself returning to it again and again to read individual chapters. Each time, I find something of value.

Bishop Hughes presents the spiritual history of the church through the lives of its leaders. Each chapter foucuses on a different spiritual master and includes a brief biography, the context of their life and teaching within the church and the world, and how they influenced the spiritual growth of the church. Both educational and personally challenging -- highly recommended.

Recommended by a respected Church historian,
This review is from: Spiritual Masters: The Living a Life of Prayer in the Catholic Tradition (Paperback)
I was listening to St Louis Catholic radio and on a program on Church history, Fr Michael Witt, PhD Church History, recommended this book. He also mentioned that this was on the reading list at Kenrich Seminary in St Louis, and stated he that several seminarians also liked this book.Fr Witt was an associate priest at my parish for several years, and from listening to numerous homilies and his Church history radio program, I can attest that he is indeed an expert on Church history, and if he recommends this book it must be good! I will be getting a copy soon! |
