Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

Awed to repentance by the infinite holiness of the Father.
Challenged to surrender by the triumphant humility of the Son.
Energized to service by the transforming power of the Spirit.

Spiritual maturity is not a level of growth Christians achieve, but the passion to press on in Christ.

In these concise chapters, J. Oswald Sanders explores the primary source of continual growth. As we embrace God’s providence, the work of the Holy Spirit, the character Christ desires, the terms of discipleship, hardship, and more, we can move from infancy toward the fruitful maturity we were created to enjoy.

Now, this new edition of Spiritual Maturity includes a “For Reflection” section, making it an ideal resource for both individual and group study.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Holocaust of Spiritual Wisdom, July 30, 2000

(REAL NAME)
Oswald Sanders was a missionary in Far East Asia, and field director of the Overseas Missionary Fellowship for many years. This book, Spiritual Maturity, is one in a series of three on serious discipleship. The other two are Spiritual Discipleship, and Spiritual Leadership (which Chuck Colson said was the best book on Christian leadership that he has read).

For Christians who have been demoralized by the shallow and superfluous popular "fluff" that abounds on the topic of discipleship, this series will come as cool water in a desert. Sanders deals with the brutal struggles in discipleship, and makes it clear there is no spiritual growth without a price. If we are not willing to pay the price--we will not grow towards maturity. As Oswald Sanders said during a series on dispcipleship at Gull Lake Bible Conference, "There are spiritual Christians, and there are unspiritual Christians. And most are unspiritual."

This kind of brutal language needs to be revived, in an age in which most Americans confuse Christian discipleship with self-help or self-optimization. In reality, the gate is still narrow, and the path hard, which leads to life (Matthew 7:14).

5.0 out of 5 stars Another awesome book..., March 24, 2005
With J. Oswald Sanders, you can't go wrong!
After having read and used "Spiritual Leadership" for personal as well as discipleship uses, I decided to give this one a try, especially for those that needed to move out of baby infancy in spiritual maturity. A very thorough and biblical look at what it means to be a true Christian, it leaves nothing out. Highly recommended!
