From the Publisher

"Would you have your songs endure? Build on the human heart." - Robert Browning The great hymns keep on giving strength, bolstering faith. They endure because they "build on the human heart." As do these meditations based on seventy favorite hymns and gospel songs. Sometimes they beckon, softly and tenderly; sometimes they pierce like a trumpet call.

Like the hymns, the readings in this book may herald tidings of comfort and joy. Rephrase an old, old story. Remind us that Jesus loves us and bids us to shine. Testify to God's amazing grace. Prompt us to fall on our knees, to lift up every voice and sing.

Some of them tie a song's origin to its message. Many weave in moments of epiphany: How and when did a particular hymn touch someone's spirit? All of them lead you to consider God's word to you as you face daily victories, setbacks, challenges, choices.

There's something extraordinary about these devotional writings by Evelyn Bence. Put yourself in the hands of a masterful storyteller who knows how to draw you in and draw you near. "Evelyn captures spiritual moments with such intensity, it seems as if we are there with Isaac Watts and Charles Wesley as they wrote the great hymns of the faith." -- Sheila Walsh, AUTHOR of Honestly "This book helps greatly in keeping the great hymns a vibrant part of our sometimes rootless western expressions of the Christian faith." -- John Michael Talbot, Recording Artist ". . . enthralling reading. Read in conjunction with the Bible, it will add a new dimension of artistry and sensitivity to one's Christian walk." -- Don Wyrtzen, Composer, Pianist, Producer

From the Back Cover

What inspired them to write the ageless masterpieces--concertos, sonatas, operas, chamber pieces, and choral works that are as fresh today as when they were first performed? What stirred the hearts of hymnists like John Newton and Fanny Crosby to pen "Amazing Grace," "Blessed Assurance," and other enduring hymns of the Christian faith? And what can we learn from these people today? In Spiritual Moments with the Great Composers, Patrick Kavanaugh shares intimate glimpses into the lives and minds of the master classicists and hymnists: their poverty, successes, failures, and rejection . . . their hard choices, heartaches, and wise decisions . . . their strong faith in Christ . . . and the other hallmarks of greatness that live behind the beauty of their works. Skillfully weaving the experiences and thoughts of the masters with scriptural passages, devotional reflections, and prayers, Spiritual Moments with the Great Composers offers seventy spiritual vignettes on ten major themes, such as joy, encouragement, and the pursuit of excellence. Complete with beautiful illustrations set in elegant counterpoint to the text, this is a devotional to treasure -- one to reach for often for depth, insight, and a deeper appreciation of music, heaven's language. 5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful collection of vinyets and moments in men's lives, June 7, 1998
This review is from: Spiritual Moments with the Great Composers (Hardcover)
This is a great collection of stories and touching moments out of the lives of many great composers. Every time I read the story of Pablo Casals' meeting with Gregor Piatigorsky (page 21) I cry whether I read it aloud or silently. One afternoon I read it to a man I was mentoring in a local jail, and the inmate was a concert pianist and was very familiar with Casal !!! My only request is that one day Patrick Kavanaugh fill in the rest of the days and produce a daily devotional. These great men struggled in their Christian life as each of us do. Thank you Pat for all the work you put in to produce this great book. It made me laugh and made me cry, you touched my heart. Jeff
