Editorial Reviews

Review

"Sophie Reicher's book is chock-full of useful techniques from many different cultural contexts for making sure that your magical tank runs clean."
--Raven Kaldera, author of the Northern Tradition Shamanism series

"Spiritual Protection is a necessary addition to any spiritual bookshelf, regardless of individual path. The instructions are clear enough for a beginner but with enough thoughtful information that even a seasoned practitioner can learn a thing or two."
--Anya Kless, author of Lilith: Queen of the Desert

I was fortunate enough to receive a review copy of this book, and as a Usui Reiki Master-Teacher, and professional spiritual practitioner I find that these topics are generally overlooked and under-taught. I try to remedy that with my students and clients, but there is a huge need for a thorough and practical book on spiritual protection.

I find most books on the topic very niche-oriented or too broad in their application. But this one does a good job of being both reasonably broad and practical without over complicating things. I was very happy to see the inclusion of many hands-on types of cleansing and protection methods, such as floor-washes and herbal baths, along with the visualization-based techniques. As a rootworker, I know the value of traditional forms of cleansing first-hand, and in many cases visualizing White Light or even a Mirror shield is just not going to be enough. This books fills in those gaps.

My one main critique of the book was the way it presented some of the rituals and methods, by invoking specific deities. Now, the author works within the traditions that do honor these particular deities, so it makes sense that she would do so. However I just was unsure as to whether someone with no tie to that particular tradition would be advised to call upon them - not out of any overly dramatic sense of it being "dangerous" or anything like that. But more in the way that the connection to Spirit is a core part of the strong cleansings and protections, and if you don't have a good connection to a particular manifestation of the Divine, you should probably use a manifestation that you DO feel that connection with. I wouldn't want a reader to think that they HAD to call on an Orisha or a Germanic deity in order to take that particular bath, for instance.

There is some good advice in this book, but only some. It's not a book for beginners, because it leaves out a out. For example, the exercise on opening and cleansing the chakras doesn't include the instruction to close them down. Also I found the authors regular reminders that she's been doing magic for twenty years rather annoying. Another thing I found annoying was that you have to get past the all-too-common practice of appropriating spells and rituals from other magical traditions (just change the names (if you want) to other gods). But she does admit that she's more interested in what works (for her) than in anything else.

This book is excellent for both beginners and experienced folks. The writer explains the techniques in an easy manner without over complicating the material. This is definitely going on my list of recommended books for my students as well as for friends who need help in this area. The recipes are wonderful. As someone who has read quite a few books on the subject, this does not disappoint but reminds, enlightens, and educates you on the most important foundation in the magickal/energetic communities!

It’s filled with exercises concerning spiritual and magical abilities and how to handle them. The author makes it apparent that the exercises within will help those cope with their abilities to control them. Yet also there is a strong emphasis about grounding, shielding, and magic. Lets dive into the details!

The main focus of the book is about magical and spiritual protection. The first chapters deal with grounding and centering and how they are essential to any magical practice. I feel like this is where things started to truly make sense for me in the book. I’ve been practicing magic since I was a teen but never really got into a serious practice of it until about five years ago. This book really helped me understand the basics of what is essential magic in terms of grounding and centering. I can’t stress enough of the enhancement I feel when I perform my own personal rites of grounding and centering. It was something most people just touched base on but never really went into depth with. This book was very immersive for me. It was hardcore and it turns out it was just what I needed to truly understand what it is that I am doing, to enhance my practice with..well..spiritual protection.

The author of course gives her own ideals about things and says she will use almost anything from making witch bottles and peeing in them to pricking her finger and using her blood for serious rituals. She tends to take rituals and things from other cultures and deems it as if it works then she will use it. Some people might have a problem with this, especially if they’re big on appropriation. I just choose to not personally use those rituals and stick to something mainly european in origin.
