Good for the Christian Counselor,

This review is from: A Spiritual Strategy for Counseling and Psychotherapy (Hardcover)
I am currently using the book for a graduate level psychology class. The authors strive to show the various worldviews, but it is based mainly on Christian views. It is a good read, but like most books in this area, you are either going to like it or loathe it.

This review is from: A Spiritual Strategy for Counseling and Psychotherapy (Hardcover)
The authors attempted to cover too much ground and have a very spotty record of being helpful. I have trained people for 40 years how to integrate faith and counseling and it is a challenge to do it rightly and ethically. One of the articles in this volume on using Rational Emotive Therapy used a strong Christian teenager who was confused and upset with his homoerotic temptations. The therapist, IMO, was unethical in promoting his own pro homosexual ideas mixed with RET to try to change the young man's convictions. He had obviously was a novice in working with same sex attractions and never asked the client permission to take the cognitive tack in trying to convince the teen that homosexual behavior was acceptable.
By bringing so many different people with different views of spirituality and different views of therapy the result is a very mixed up bag that will be unhelpful to most Therapists.

While I may not agree with every aspect of the authors strategy I, as a spiritual counselor, am very happy that finally we can take seriously in therapy this essential part of the human experience. For too long have we been encouraged or even forced to ignore and brush aside that which gives meaning to our lives, as holistic therapists this is unacceptable and it is past time we say "no more." I offer my thanks to the authors for their bold contribution to psychology and hope to see more of the same.
