Book Description

Spiritual Traveler May 1, 2009
he Spiritual Traveler: Spain is an exploration of Spain s many sacreds, from the land s deepest past to its most immediate present. While a rich and vast undertaking, the routes and sites selected here are those that have the deepest spirit in Iberia,

Visitors to Spain often speak of a deeply transcendent energy that pervades the land and the people. In part, it is because Spain is an ancient land with a continuity of many eras and many peoples who inhabited the peninsula for over 40,000 years. In part, there is a magic about the geography, a land of numerous mountain ranges, coastal zones, and great, broad plains and tablelands. Such rich natural and human diversity has infused Spain with a profound sacred experience, from Upper Paleolithic Altamira to St. Teresa s early modern Avila.

Spain contains one of the world s great pilgrimage roads, the Camino de Santiago. Spain also possesses smaller and more local pilgrimages and sacred sites that reflect the vast richness of all its inhabitants, from the original Paleolithic inhabitants, to the original Iberians most likely arriving from North Africa, to the Celts, the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, Visigoths, Arabs and Berbers, and later, the emerging Castilians. More recently, Spaniards and diverse foreigners in Iberia are seeking new and old spiritualities, some native and others imported, but all sacred.

The Spiritual Traveler: Spain reveals that the sacred is strong in Spain, preserved in living histories and practices, timeless sacred routes, and subtle but still vibrant folkloric traditions and mythologies.

More About the Author

Beebe Bahrami is a widely-published writer and cultural anthropologist. She specializes in travel, food and wine, adventure, spiritual, and cross-cultural themes and focuses on the cultures of Spain, France, Portugal, and Morocco.

Her book, The Spiritual Traveler: Spain--A Guide to Sacred Sites and Pilgrim Routes is a celebration of the truly sacred and spiritual places, traditions, peoples, and roads of Spain. It is a non-denominational and deeply anthropological and folkloric travel book on Spain's prehistoric, pagan, Jewish, Christian, and Muslim past. It is also a spiritual exploration of the country's diverse present, such as in emerging communities dedicated to Buddhism, Hinduism, animistic Earth-based spiritualities, as well as current revivals of the land's connection to the three Abrahamic faiths. Each chapter explores a region, a thematic route, and the most vibrant spiritual life of that area.

Bahrami has dedicated over 23 years to living, traveling, exploring, and writing about Spain's mystical depths, as well as the country's everyday life, food and wine, culture, and natural splendors. She has infused this book with rich mythic, folkloric, historical, cultural, and spiritual insights, along with selecting some of the richest and most moving sacred places and pilgrimage roads in Spain.

In addition to The Spiritual Traveler Spain, Bahrami's writing also appears in Michelin Green Guides, National Geographic books, Transitions Abroad, Perceptive Travel, Matador Trips, The Expeditioner, The Pennsylvania Gazette, and in Archaeology, Expedition, Wag and Bark magazines. You can read her work at www.BeebesFeast.com.

Prior to becoming a writer, Bahrami was a university professor, an ethnographic consultant, and a magazine editor. She earned her PhD from the University of Pennsylvania in anthropology, with a specialty in the cultures, languages, peoples, histories, and sacred traditions of the western Mediterranean world. This specialty continues to drive and inspire Bahrami's work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rich and Inspiring, June 1, 2009
This review is from: The Spiritual Traveler Spain: A Guide to Sacred Sites and Pilgrim Routes (Paperback)
After reading this book I am definitely planning a trip to Spain. Packed with tidbits of history, folklore and fascinationg information. Beebe Bahrami does a magnificent job of enticing the reader with her beautiful and comprehensive descriptions and interpretations of the spiritual mysteries that belong to a country with an ancient and tumultous past. From the Phoenician goddess, Tanit, to Galician sanctuaries, there is something new to discover in every chapter. I found the chapter on sacred animals and plants especially wonderful and enlightening. Her writing style is clear, inspiring and intelligent. I highly recommend this five star book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sacred travels through Spain, July 2, 2009
This review is from: The Spiritual Traveler Spain: A Guide to Sacred Sites and Pilgrim Routes (Paperback)
The Spiritual Traveler is an enticing read. I have been lucky enough to travel through a few sections of this mysterious and complex country and felt as though I were being transported back to the dusty Camino. It is as if a picture is being painted right before you as you journey through each chapter. The author has a unique way of coupling the mystic and the scientific, making it appealing to a wide audience. This book shows that like happiness, the discovery of spirit lies within the journey, not in a particular destination.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tremendous book on Spain, May 29, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Spiritual Traveler Spain: A Guide to Sacred Sites and Pilgrim Routes (Paperback)
This is a tremendous book on Spain, especially for persons who have a conscious spiritual pursuit in their lives. The author has obviously spent a whole lot of time on the ground throughout Spain, knows it well and wants to help you in getting to know it better in your own way. She also has done the historical and anthropological research to give in depth background to her observations and guidance. I have used this book during my travels in Spain and it guided me to places that would have been unknown to me. Then it helped me to see, experience, and understand what would not have been apparent to me.
