Book Description

Evil is real, and Christian women know it. While most books on the topic of spiritual warfare take a charismatic approach, Spiritual Warfare for Women aims directly at the center of the evangelical market, giving instruction and assurance to all women who want to protect themselves and the ones they love. McCoy provides spiritual wisdom and practical tips on identifying the enemy's strategies, overcoming fear, and exercising the power that comes from God. The book is structured around the battle between God's love and Satan's lies. Once a woman can embrace the first and reject the second, she is well on her way to victory.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Resource for Spiritual Warfare July 29, 2011
Format:Paperback
Spiritual Warfare for Women: Winning the Battle for Your Home, Family, and Friends, by Leighann McCoy, is a fantastic book addressing spiritual warfare and, specifically, in a woman's life.

I have read several books on the unseen battles that rage around us in the spiritual realm, and this one is one of my favorites. I am not one to underline in books, but this book has underlining all through it now that I'm through with it!

In the first part of the book, McCoy starts by discussing God's love for His children. His love is our most powerful weapon against the enemy of our soul, because His love is what ultimately defeated Satan and redeemed us.

In the next section, she exposes the enemy, who he is and what he does. She also writes about what spiritual warfare really is.

In part three of the book, McCoy addresses the targets in our lives as women that Satan most often attacks: our marriages, our children, our friendships, our health, and our churches. She really gets into detail in these topics, devoting an entire chapter to each area.

The last part of the book is devoted to discussing our victory in Christ. This part discusses who we are in Christ, how we can defeat our enemy, and why we should not fear Satan.

The really interesting thing about this book, is that the year that McCoy wrote this book, she was diagnosed with cancer (and survived it), experienced a flood in the large church her husband is the pastor at, and was also dealing with a wayward daughter (something that came as a shock and was completely unexpected to McCoy.) So she wrote from experience. She was living in the trenches of warfare while in the midst of writing the book. And so she was living what she was writing, putting to practice what she was preaching.

I really think this book is a great, helpful tool for spiritual warfare. McCoy writes with humor too, which helps offset the seriousness of the topic. I did not feel this book to be overwhelming or frightening as some books on this topic are, but she presented the reality of spiritual warfare in a lighter way. Not that she made light of spiritual warfare, because she definitely did not do that. She just made the subject a little less scary than some other resources I have read.

This is definitely a keeper. I HIGHLY recommend this book to my sisters in Christ! Spiritual warfare is real, and we need to be alert to the subtle ways Satan attacks us in our lives. And this is a great resource for educating yourself on the topic and how to do battle in Christ.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House in exchange for my honest review.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spiritual Warfare for Women August 31, 2011
Format:Paperback
Spiritual Warfare for Women is new from Bethany House and is written by Leighann McCoy. Leighann is a speaker and writer. She is the prayer and women's minister at a large Southern Baptist church where her husband serves as pastor, and she has written a number of devotionals and Bible studies for women. She lives with her family in Franklin, TN.

That being said, I'd not heard of her until I picked up this little 229 page book. My own pastor husband is doing a series on spiritual warfare right now and I thought it might be interesting to get a woman's take on the subject.

This book is divided into several sections. The first section being about God's love. As I read this section I wasn't sure I was going to like the rest of the book. This section is pretty basic Sunday-school type stuff. Stuff I've known and have practiced for decades. For a new believer it's probably something that they'd be happy to hear again.

The rest of the book blew me away. Really good stuff in there. Leighann teaches the reader who their enemy is. Where he came from and how to defeat him. She made several interesting points that I'd never thought of before, one being on what deception really is and how the enemy uses it to keep us from being who God wants us to be.

If you're looking for a book that will teach you how to be a strong fighter in the Lord's kingdom then I highly recommend that you get a copy of this one. Excellent.

This book was provided for review by Bethany House Publishers in exchange for my honest opinion.

3.0 out of 5 stars Solid, Scriptural, But a Bit Flat July 11, 2012
Format:Paperback
Spiritual Warfare for Women is written by Leighann McCoy - a pastor's wife, women's minister, mom, and cancer survivor. Having survived her own personal struggles with the enemy, she has drawn much of the material from her work from her own life and her experiences in ministry.

McCoy covers general spiritual principles such as God's love for us, and who the enemy is, before digging into women-specific targets that the enemy tends to focus on because they mean so much to us: marriage, children, friendships, health, and church. She then closes with encouragement by reaffirming our position in Christ - asserting that we are already victors!

Every chapter draws strongly upon scripture to support its teachings and closes with encouragement to dig into specific sections of the Word to gain further understanding, a prayer suggestion, verses to memorize, and tips to make that memorization happen. Of course, McCoy liberally sprinkles the book with her own experiences to lend real life examples and context to her teachings.

Solid as the book is, somehow it wasn't exactly what I was expecting. It certainly does cover a good range of entry-level topics and core knowledge one needs to enter into the battle with their eyes open. Though it's hard to exactly pinpoint, I felt like something was missing a bit - as though the book was a bit lighter and fluffier than I was expecting as opposed to giving me the real, nitty-gritty goods. That could just be my perception, but for some reason I was expecting something a bit different.
